90 degree temp swing in 7 days

I’m not “complaining” but it amazes me how resilient animals are that live outside 24/7, including my own horses.

We’ve had a very long and very cold snap of weather lately. For the past 3 weeks, it’s been below zero at night every night. This week has been extreme, and we’ve hit daily records for it reaching -39 * F at night (air temp … wind chill was colder than that, approaching -60 * F) and it is projected on Monday to be 49 * F .

That is nearly a 90 degree air temperature difference in less than 7 days. Just crazy. For any animal living outside, wild or not.

I know this is gonna set off my horse with heaves (she struggles in the temp swings) so I will be watching her closely.

It’s going to literally feel like summer this weekend. I can’t wait! Time to start getting them legged back up again.

Photo for fun. This was the other night, giving my two girls their extra calories when the air temp was -27 * F at that moment. I feed at my trailer because I do not have a barn. I am so very thankful my horses are healthy, and have great winter coats as I do not blanket. My geldings are fat and don’t need any extra calories … even when it’s this cold! We don’t have a lot of snow right now so they still go out grazing most of the day; I have quite a bit of acerage.

What state are you in? We have had some wild swings here in Texas too with windchills to -10 which is pretty rare here in Dallas!

God I do not miss winter in Minnesota. Those temps were zero fun.

Enjoy your upcoming heat wave!!!

50 degree swings within 8 hours happen every year around here. Yours is very extreme, but that is weather for you.

Right. It’s one thing to be 80 degrees during the day and dip to 30 at night, for example if in a dry desert climate. (we obviously do not usually have that kind of swing in my neck of the woods) But going from one NEGATIVE temp to the opposite temp on the POSITIVE side is just plain ridiculous!

not sure if you think I am in a desert, (ha ha) I am in humid Mo. It goes both ways. – to + and + to --.
