A cautionary tale

This article showed up in yourdressage today, and I thought it was a really good one.

This is almost exactly how I got hurt 15 years ago, a fall that I’ve been paying for dearly. I was a competent rider and trainer of green-beans that made a simple stupid error in judgment based on a false belief in my own skill combined with a little more tolerance for risk than was wise.

If you’re a young person, a competent rider, I urge you to read this, and always exercise safety rules. It’s SO hard as you get experience to remember that complacency and momentary lapses in judgment can be devastating.

Really good article. Thanks for sharing. A few months ago, I started putting on my helmet as soon as I get to the barn and keeping it on until I get in the car to go home. I wear it tacking up. I wear it during bathing/hosing. I wear it bringing horses in from turnout. I also make sure the lead rope is never looped around my hand or arm. My goal is to ride until I can’t throw a leg over.

OP seems to have deleted it

I didn’t delete it - it’s still here and I can both see it and click on it.

Maybe something is wrong with COTH for you? Anyway - here it is again (and I’m the OP)

Yes, it’s been hiccuping for a while. I see it now. 🤷

I did something similar, got on my horse to take him to his paddock bareback, halter and lead, which we had done forever… but from the far side and without the usual “I’m getting on” pat… and promptly he took off bucking.
The story gets more stupid from there… I was lucky and it was nowhere near this woman’s story.

This woman was incredibly lucky.

I think we all forget how easy it can be to get hurt badly when around horses. Even doing things at home and riding as we always do can end badly under the right circumstances.

The lady in the article was lucky to be able to get her and the horse home. Her guardian angles were busy that day.

Must have been the acute ones; as far as I know obtuse ones don’t take on guardianship

I don’t know if there really is such a thing as guardian angels but I can tell you from my own life that there has to be something . I’ve dodged the bullet too many times…
