A Circuit trainers near Toronto, ON?

Seeking a junior-friendly barn near Toronto. I’m located in midtown, with easy access to the 404; current barn is in Stouffville and the commute is excellent - approx 35 minutes.

Any recommended trainers or barns around there? Looking to keep board under $1000/month, lesson 2x per week and show in the .9s and maybe move up to the 1ms/CET mini medal this summer. Long term goals include the Big Eq. Also hoping to find a hunter available in-barn to PB and show without breaking the bank, but not a requirement. Would also like someone who understand the value of good flatwork.

Hoping to keep the drive under 1hr - rush hour traffic doesn’t affect me as badly as I am able to leave the city at 3.45PM.

I don’t need to ride with the biggest name, but someone who is eq-centric would be ideal. They also need to understand that I cannot afford to “keep up with the Joneses”, am a student, and must be TB-friendly.

Thanks everyone for your help in advance, I have a list of names but I really need to figure out more options.

I can vouch for Greg Kuti he’s awesome!! He and my old coach are very old friends and I have had many clinics with him. He works with the student to get the best from their mount (whatever the breed…he worked with me and my Appy). He is currently at WEF though so I don’t know if you will have much success getting a hold of him.
Schellenberg is where Greg used to coach for a while as well as at his own place. While I don’t know them, I know that Greg would never partner with someone who wasn’t at a high level of trustworthiness and horsemanship. Worth a look anyways and full board is within your budget. The facility looks very nice!

He hasn’t been at Chorbe for over a year, I believe. Peter Gisborn is the A trainer at Schellenberg last I heard.

Yes Chor-Be Farm is no longer operating out of the old farm near Schomberg and Greg is currently showing at Ocala (not WEF). Peter still trains at Schellenberg as well as his own facility near Erin. I will be speaking to both these trainers today and mention this post…nice to hear good recommendations for both.

HJeq if you send me a PM I can give you a list of A trainers that I could recommend for you. Some near Stouffville.

Monterra Farms is great–located Claremont just off the 407. The prices are reasonable and the coaching and care is great. I also like that a vet lives on site. There are several juniors there—they like to have fun but they are also competitive. Their website sucks, but the farm is great!

Another vote here for both Greg and Peter, I’ve had nothing but wonderful experiences with both of them

Peter is fantastic, but might be too far west for you.

I would look at Gryphon Farm in Schomberg - Mac and Christi are great with juniors and produce solid eq riders.

Unfortunately there are not very many “A” barns close to TO anymore as I have learned. Many of the farms have gone due to development and the few that remain are quite old. If you find one that is close, please send me a note!

There are lots of “A” barns near Toronto (within an hour’s commute, taking into account the terrible traffic), but many are on the west/north-west side (eg: Caledon and King areas).

And I don’t know many that would have $1000. board - likely to be much higher.

Now if you’re talking Trillium circuit barns, yes those are less expensive.

Kimstar is correct. I can count at least 15 top “A” hunter/jumper barns within a half hour of my own private farm located near Schomberg. Many of these are long established and respected show barns. At one time not too long ago 3 out of 4 our Olympic Canadian Team jumper riders considered King Township home.

Someone once told me that east of the 404 is often considered the event crowd clientele or Trillium level hunter/jumper barns and school barns where the west side of Hwy 400 and south into King is where where the A hunter/jumper barns are located. With a few exceptions I think this is still the case. Of course the proximity to the Caledon Horse Park draws a lot of the A riders to this area…and at least two big brand new A barns are opening up this summer also in the immediate area. Full training board at these top barns will cost approx $1500.00 plus extras (plus HST) per month with some much more expensive than that. I don’t foresee these large horse properties being developed any time soon either. Terribly difficult to get zoning for development due to the Oak Ridges Moraine etc. not to mention the money and political influence among the very well to do property owners in this Township.

There are definitely many barns a half hour from the Schomberg area but that will most likely equate to more than an hour drive from midtown TO :-)…

I don’t know the cost of board and lessons for these but here’s a list. I doubt many of them come in under $1,000/mo for board.

Just off the top of my head.

I can’t think of anywhere that you can “part board” a horse to show. Lease, yes. That will cost you though.

Chris Delia and Greenhaven are not too far for midtown commuting at about 1 hours drive on a good day. Peter Gisborn’s farm is ~ 1 hour 10 min., also on a good day and 3C is ~ 1 1/2 hours so much farther away. The others are closer but you will have to actually visit the facilities to see if they have what you are looking for in an “A” barn. None of the barns within the 1 hour commute will be less than $1,000/month board :).

Thanks everyone. I have a meeting set up tomorrow with a trainer who comes personally recommended. Older farm but just down the road from where I was before - actually closer to the highway. Will update on how that goes.

A second for Greenhaven Stables. peaceful environment, great care and welcoming of all types of horses.
