A good wire winder? Eg hotwoods....

We need to recover a lot of electric fencing rope and re-deploy it to make new paddocks at a different farm. Geo-tech, 2 and 3 strands around half a dozen 2-20 acre paddocks, so a fair amount of rope!

Got the tractor, got the pto, got the atv, and dh has been pondering the most efficient way to tackle this onerous task.

He came across a link for the Hotwoods Magnum Hydraulic Wire Winder which looks like it might do the trick.

Anyone used it with any success? Any other brands or types?

TIA!

I didn’t even know they made such a thing! My wire winder is a broom handle. I think it’s time for an upgrade.

Hopefully someone else has some first hand experience to share.

Nobody…??? I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing!

We line one back wheel of the pickup with the line to be pulled, jack the pickup up behind, take one back wheel off the pickup, add a rim without a wheel, start winding by starting the pickup and very slowly picking up speed until right, wind until the rim is full, stop and take that one off, put another empty one there, repeat.

We have wound miles of electric wire like that, without ever getting in trouble and the wire stores just right in those old rims, until we need it again.

To use the wire, we run a tamping bar thru the middle, sit in the back of the pickup and let it unroll as we drive along, holding the bar on our feet, the rim in the middle.
Or put two metal rods in the back stake pockets on each side, the long bar behind them and drive off as it unwinds.

Those commercial wire winders also work fine, see plenty of those in use around here.

I don’t have that much to gather up, but I use a hose reel. It’s one of those stand-alone hose reels, which got a new job when it failed as a hose reel. It works great, but would likely be too small for your use.
