A humping male cat...wtf?

My big male cat will hump one of our females (but only one of them, she tolerates it–the other two would probably turn around and smack him!) He usually does it to show his dominance over her or when he feels like he is lacking in attention. If we make sure to give him enough attention (he’s one that likes to sit in your lap and make biscuits on your collarbone), he doesn’t do it. When he does though, we just get him off and I usually make him leave (go downstairs/upstairs) and cuddle my poor girl that he did it to

Oh man, this is timely. My orange cat, now 14, is a serial humper. He has abused many a textile in his day(polar fleece, wool blankets, my cashmere hoodie  ) but the sexiest fabric of all time as far as he was concerned was this sheepskin throw I got from IKEA about 5 years ago. After a couple years of hard use, the sheepskin started looking pretty haggard, so I tossed it when I moved. I’m sure Squeaky grieved inwardly. But the world is full of fuzzy fabrics, and so life moved on.

Found myself at an IKEA for unrelated reasons this past weekend, on a whim decided to buy Mr. Squeaky a replacement sheepskin of exactly the same type. When I presented Sheepskin II, I didn’t know if the old magic would be preserved… oh, but it was. Instant obsession!

I’ve had to actually start putting the seductive thing away and only taking it out in the evening hours, because otherwise I’m afraid my poor old dude would literally wear himself thin.

My now departed kitty used to do that to anything polar fleece. Unfortunately, all my dog blankets are polar fleece remnants. More than once I found him humping my old, senile dog when she was burrowed under a blanket, blissfully unaware of the assault taking place.
You owe me a keyboard!

Seriously – OP, thank you for posting this. I thought I was the only one with a neutered cat who went kayaking occasionally. This makes me feel less alone. And slightly less weird.

…we just get him off … :/
One way to take care of a horny cat…

Sorry, winter in Michigan is getting to me

There was a cat on Jackson Galaxy’s show that had a special stuffed monkey that was designated just for humping. Apparently he (the cat) was obsessed with it.

Yes, it’s normal. Or, at least, it’s not abnormal! lol

Our cats do it occasionally and I’ve caught my old gelding doing it a few times.:lol:

Regarding peeing in the laundry basket - Everything is fine physically. he only does it when there is dirty laundry in the basket. He has also peed on my backpack when I returned home from my parents house where their cats had been near it. I am guessing it’s more of a marking behavior.

Count yourself lucky. Our big male humps the neurologically impaired cat and our ancient dog. Of course he doesn’t try it with the younger dog or the mentally capable cats! I’d be much happier if he’d just use inanimate objects
GAH!!! He’s a sex predator that preys on the really vulnerable! He should be in prison, or at least on house arrest with an ankle bracelet. His own house, with warning signs on the door, closed curtains, and a parole officer.

Ok, I’m not complaining about my cats obnoxious behavior any more. Neither of them have been found humping anything…yet.

And I can’t believe I wasn’t going to open this thread!

Our big male does that too–and loves marking on plastic as well. We did get a Feliway pheromone diffuser and that has really mellowed him out–he’s hasn’t completely stopped marking, but it has cut down probably 80-90% of it.

I had an older rescue meezer who humped pretty much everything.
But by far his favorite was my slippered foot. He’d leap onto my foot crying and growling and if I walked away would cling to the slipper desperately.

It made my morning dash to the bathroom pretty challenging, and once I couldn’t get there fast enough and peed on his head.
He didn’t even notice.

One of my boy kitties tries to hump one of his brothers regularly. Unfortunately his brother doesn’t share in the lovin feeling, so his lovemaking skills are all for naught.

Several years ago we had a male cat who was obsessed with our son’s giant stuffed Clifford the Big Red Dog. Poor Clifford would just be blissfully hanging out in the arm chair and the cat would come along and hump him for such a long time that I would have to pull him away just to give Clifford a break. Then I’d toss Clifford in the wash and try to separate him from the cat until my son would find his stuffed friend and put him back in the chair, only to get the cat all googly eyed again.

After awhile the hump and wash routine wore poor Clifford out and he started to split at the seams from the stress, so we told my son that all the “hugging” wasn’t good for Clifford and we retired him. The cat moved on to blankets. He liked to bite those while he was humping them, which he never did with Clifford. So maybe he really loved Clifford and I just never knew it ;).
