A humping male cat...wtf?

So, this morning our cat was on the couch, where there was a blanket just kind of tossed on the couch, so it was piled up, and he was on the blanket (he likes to snuggle to sleep).

He has this habit of peeing in our laundry baskets if we leave them down on the floor with clothes in them, so at first when I saw him on the bunched up blanket, I thought he was peeing on it because he was positioned like he was going to pee. But then I realized that he was humping the blanket! WTF?

His “equipment” was even out, in plain view. When I chased him off the blanket, his equipment stayed out until he walked away and hid under the end table.

Cat is 12 years old
male - neutered, has been since a kitten

Do cats randomly hump things like they are actually doing the act? I have never seen this before and I was kind of grossed out.

Thoughts?

Maybe kitty had a sweet dream all snuggled on the couch blanket?

I do remember one male cat, neutered, that we had when I was a kid that would occasionally do that. But he’s the only one I’ve ever known, and I have had many boy cats since then.

Yep. I had an older neutered male cat who regularly masturbated like you described. It was disturbing.

Why was it disturbing? Kitty’s having fun.

I’ve never seen a male cat do that. At least they don’t routinely hump people’s legs!

I still think I saw our pony doing it in the pasture one day. BM said he was just scratching his stomach but I’ve never seen another pony or horse do that. Looked to me like he was enjoying himself.

I did see a Tasmanian Devil masturbating once on TV. That was disturbing to me, but maybe partly because I hadn’t realized any animals but dogs did that, and partly because the narrator said it was because there were so many more male than female Tasmanian Devils in the area that the poor guy couldn’t get his rocks off any other way. Sad

I asked a good friend who is a small animal vet and she also said its “normal” behavior. Her own kitty tried it twice to her while she was under a fuzzy blanket but she tossed him off onto the floor and he hasn’t tried it since

I’m not sure why I’m so grossed out by it; meanwhile, I think the thread where the landscaper crapped in the customer’s yard and told his coworkers about it is hilarious…

Because he is your cat and the pig is not your boss?

My now departed kitty used to do that to anything polar fleece. Unfortunately, all my dog blankets are polar fleece remnants. More than once I found him humping my old, senile dog when she was burrowed under a blanket, blissfully unaware of the assault taking place.

We had an old male cat who was on anabolic steroids to combat wasting associated with kidney failure. That walking skeleton was HORNY. He didn’t use blankets, he had my female cat. Poor girl, she wasn’t in great shape herself (congestive heart failure), and the old man was on her every time you turned around. She ignored him.

I am loving this thread!

Normal behavior.

Normal. Of my 4 cats (all neutered males), 1 occasionally humps.

Count yourself lucky. Our big male humps the neurologically impaired cat and our ancient dog. Of course he doesn’t try it with the younger dog or the mentally capable cats! I’d be much happier if he’d just use inanimate objects

I’m just going to point out that peeing in laundry is a huge sign of urinary crystals/UTI in a neutered male cat. It pretty much never starts as a habit, and if he hasn’t been checked out he probably should be.

Oh man, this thread is hilarious.

My dads Siamese cats (both male) were 15 and 16 when they passed and I don’t remember either one of them humping anything.

It’s blowing my mind that more people don’t have cats that do this. One of mine is a fiend and will assault anything that can be pulled onto the floor. Blankets, pillows, handtowels, hung clothing… last night even included clean rolled socks. Even more disturbingly he cries while doing it. It doesn’t bother me much except when he snags one of the baby’s blankets. What the hell, freakshow!

Our usual morning exchange is “good morning Humperdink, what kind of fun did you have last night?”

I agree…that’s fricken hilarious!!!

I have a spayed female dog who humps my neutered male cat. I’m told it’s a dominance thing.

I’m told it’s a dominance thing.

no, the vets just say that because they don’t want to tell people that yup, animals get horny and do these kinds of things and even neutered animals get horny.
If it were “dominance” why would so many neutered dogs and cats hump pillows and blankets and the like?

Is he just called Humperdink on these occasions or is that his name? My sister had a cat who had the nickname “Sir Humps-a-Lot”.
