A TRULY Unflippable Water Dish

Does such exist? Or am I going to have to build something?

Solo and I have an ongoing discussion over this. I do have a supposedly flip-resistant dish, bought in her honor. I still can never fill it more than a quarter of the way because she has a splash party, and this morning, I found the thing a good six feet away, extracted from its flip-resistant holder and upside down. She is very intelligent and considers this a challenge and a toy. I did once try a water fountain years ago, because an article said that this was considered less of a challenge to water-dish-flippers and eliminated their frustration, because cats like flowing water better. They were correct on the final part of that statement, at least. She definitely liked flowing water better, even more fun. The fountain was returned after two days. This cat will get into the shower while it’s running.

So is the bank vault of flip-proof dishes out there?

Picture of the culprit.

I’ve found that REALLY HEAVY ceramic bowls are the only free-standing bowls that work to keep cats, or dogs, from spilling their water. But is has to be a very heavy weight or all bets are off.

We also stumbled on another solution quite by accident. When our large dog had a surgery and didn’t want to eat, Our vet suggested a raised feeder (which worked like a charm, she ate from the very first meal in it and we had no more problems with her eating). The feeder we bought had two bowls (food and water). The cats loved it for getting drinks but unfortunately they tipped the whole thing over when they jumped on it, flooding the floor constantly.

Then I saw a nice heavy wood and metal (iron?) feeder and bought it. Total success, not one water spill or flood since (it’s been over a year), even though the cats get up on it to drink all the time.

There are also “floating” shelf feeders which would work very well for water spillers.

Hope this helps. From someone whose floors have been flooded more times than I want to count! 🙀

What type of floors do you have? I wonder if one of those suction silicone bowl placemats they make for toddlers would work?? (Google suction bowl placemat) I imagine they’re not as deep as a regular bowl, so you’d have to keep an eye on the water level.

Check with the rabbit people, bunnies are pros at flipping bowls over! Like someone said above – straight sided heavy ceramic.

I use HIC (Harold Import Company) souffle bowls. These, pick a size: https://www.amazon.com/HIC-Souffle-Porcelain-32-Ounce-Capacity/dp/B0006BDBC2/

I have considered some time of heavy stand to put my dish flippers bowl in. What I am doing at the moment, which seems to work, is I have put a desert dish inside a dog dish with a rubber ring on its’ bottom. This combo still gets moved around but so far never flipped. When moved and the water sloshes the dog dish catches the spill. Silly kitty.

I have one of those: the cat that would flip over the water dish and loved it. Duncan. He would either stand on the edge and push down sharply with his front legs and then leap back, missing getting splashed and watch the water run all over (the house I lived in had really uneven floors). Or he would reach out his verrryyy lllooooonnnggg front legs and try to pull the dish towards him. If it did not move, then he would give it a good yank and ker-sploosh.

I fixed his little red wagon. I bought a crock pot insert. Tip THAT over. No…now he just goes swimming in it. sigh
Same with the Le Creuset stew/casserole pot. Can’t spill it, so he swims in it.

Go to Goodwill and buy a used crockpot insert. Those are truly heavy ceramic bowls.

I have one of these for my car. It’s an awesome thing. It can nearly be tipped over and no spillage.

Thanks, everybody. I’ve ordered a heavy ceramic bowl. I also have ideas about a wooden frame that would fit over it, with 2 x 4 sides bracing the bowl in and two strips on top on each side going over the bowl edge and preventing it from being lifted. I just got home from church, and my solution for this morning is still upright. I took a kitchen boiler and put rocks in it, then filled with water. They looked at me like I was nuts, but it has worked, although there was a little splash around when I got home where she had tried. But I’ll be glad to have a better-looking solution. Besides, I like that boiler for cooking.

I had to have some temporary solution for the kittens to get water while I was gone several hours this morning. The big cats can reach the toilets as an alternative source, but my three orphan kittens I’m working on at the moment are too little to jump up. They can climb and scramble amazingly well, but they can’t jump yet.

A bowl that closely fits inside a heavy ceramic bowl might do the trick and help contain some of the splash mess.

I use this for my dog that flips his water and a messy drinker. So far 3 months and no flips.

At one point, I was seriously considering getting a kiddie splash pool, putting the water bowl in it and if he spilled it the splash would be contained and the other cats would still be able to drink. It appears, though, that Mr Splish-Splash I’m taking a bath has given up. For now?

I just remembered that our puppy liked to scoot her food and water dishes across the floor, tip them over, make a mess. My DH stuck the two small flat-bottomed ceramic bowls to a piece of floor slate with some silicon caulk. It’s a little awkward to clean, but much less than the messes on the floor.

I had a splasher. I put the weighted water bowl inside a rubber maid storage container. Not decorator approved, but effective.

I’m so amazed that someone else already mentioned the crock pot insert! I have a lot of dogs and cats and that is the only water dish that any of a few of them do not use to make a mess. It’s perfect for the job and actually doesn’t look too bad.
