A truly waterproof turnout sheet/blanket?

Does anyone have a turnout sheet they feel is truly waterproof? I’m just not happy with the one I have now. It seems to get damp inside when it’s truly wet out (our pony has shelter in his turnout, but he just stands out in the rain regardless). I believe this one is an Amigo.

As much as I’d love to try a Rambo, I just can’t do a $300++ option!

Suggestions?

Are you sure the dampness is a function of not being waterproof enough, and not being breathable enough?

Or, maybe it’s too heavyweight for the conditions, and the pony is sweating and the moisture can’t let it escape fast enough?

I’ve never found my horses damp in their Rambos.

But I agree that it sounds like you’re either blanketing too heavily or dealing with a breathability issue.

FWIW I love Schneiders. The Nordlund sheets and medium weights have been serving me well for several years now. The Stormshield is what I used before (and still have some of), but I found the high neck of the Nordlund makes my horses happier in the rain.

Possibly, but the pony is wet underneath and it doesn’t seem like sweat. Actually, his existing medium TO blanket is not so bad. The sheet is really disappointing though. That’s probably the one I need to focus on replacing. I think this one is an Amigo.

I have a sheet that’s SmartPak brand that I like. I’ve had it 2 years and it came used with a horse, so not sure how old it is. No rips, and still waterproof unless it’s truly downpouring… think it’s the Ultimate Turnout Sheet? I like it. SmartPak website says $180.

I will say that I also had a Rambo. It was at least 10+ years old before it began to become a little leaky. Used almost yearly (a couple of those years I didn’t have a horse it fit so it sat). I think they’re worth it! Still use it in a drizzle sometimes.

Try the Rambo Originals. They are less expensive, and if you shop by midnight, 20% off at most on line stores.

I have a SmartPak Deluxe turnout sheet that’s probably four years old now and still 100% waterproof. I wash it 1x/year in Rambo Wash and line dry it, and my horse stays dry and warm even in a 24-hour downpour situation. I have not had to rewaterproof it. He also has big withers and it fits him well–no rubs or anything. It’s a pretty affordable sheet as well.

I’m pleasantly surprised with SP brand blankets because a lot of their in house products aren’t so great, but their Deluxe line is really nice. Some other horses at the barn have the Ultimate line, and those are really nice. You should be able to get them on sale.

Before you replace it try Nikwax, I swear by it!! I wash and rewaterproof my Amigos once a yr. You just wash and proof it right in the washer. I buy the softshell set. Its a green wash bottle and purple bottle for the waterproofing. I just ordered a set last night on ebay for 20 bucks for the senior I just inherited yesterday.

Atsko waterproofing, at Walmart (neon orange top, can’t miss it!) does a great job and is inexpensive. I’d try that first before going with a new blanket, just to see.

I have an assortment of Amigos, Rhinos and Rambos- they are the only blankets/ sheets I’ll use. I’ve never had an issue of them not being waterproof and I’m in the mid-Atlantic so we see A LOT of rain. When was the last time you had them waterproofed?

Same with me.

However I have never been able to get a sheet that’s lost waterproofing to become waterproof again. Sheets seem to last a couple of years, at most, while blankets can go 10+. I have had the best luck with the Horseware lines.

I think the Rhino’s are supposed to have a waterproof membrane on the inside so washing shouldn’t affect the waterproofing. I have one and after 3 years it’s still waterproof. I use a Kengsington (plasticy) fly sheet over top to protect it from getting caught on anything (like other teeth! :))

I’m a big fan of Rambos, but they don’t fit my “curvy” mare - her shoulders are too big and she gets rubs. I love her new Schneiders blanket! It fits her perfectly and it’s super waterproof. They have different levels of cost, with different guarantees. Their priciest one has a lifetime warranty https://www.sstack.com/armorflex-warrior-v-free-turnout-blankets/p/31434m/

The SP Ultimate line also has a 10 year guarantee for waterproofing and tears, and you can usually get them on sale. I got one for around $100 earlier this year.

Ditto, including the full range of Horseware products (though of the Amigo line I only use the Bravo 12) and the location. I wash them only in Nikwax, a couple times a season, and re-waterproof them with Rug Proof every year. I finally retired one of my Rambos at 15 years old and it was still waterproof.

Bucas. I’ve tried them all.

Living in Georgia it will be 70 and sunny one day and 40 with 24 hours of STRAIGHT rain the next. I put my horse’s bucas turnout (with hood) on, and literally almost 9 hours later in driving rain I brought him in and uncovered him BONE dry. I don’t know anything that will hold up truly in constant rain without being brought in to dry/changed out, but Bucas is the closest I’ve seen.

So far my premier equine sheet and 100g are staying beautifully waterproof. Newer rambo/rhino/amigos not so much. Much better price point too.

Just last month I ordered a Premier Equine blanket. So far I am very impressed by the quality. It is also generously sized, which is good, given that my mare is also somewhat generously sized. I highly recommend them.

I ordered from England, and it came two days after I ordered it. And with the exchange rate between the pound and dollar being so dollar friendly, the blanket was more than reasonably priced.

My Rhinos keep my boys dry through 48 hours of rain.
