A very large boy

I just bought a two year old kwpn/dutch warmblood gelding off a video (we’ll see about that aha) and when he got here he was much bigger than we expected, around 16.3-17 hh. His sire is 17.1, and his dam is 16.3. He’s built tall and skinny, which makes me wonder if he’ll try to grow taller or outward. Does anyone have any idea of his eventual size?

My Holsteiner is 17.3. His sire was 16.3 and his dam was 15.3. Seems like genetics are a crap shoot sometimes!

Same as downen - my mare is 18.2 (and still growing). Her sire was 16.1 and her dam 17.2. I definitely didn’t expect her to get as tall as she is!

He will definitely surpass his sire’s height if he is already close to 16.3hh-17hh at 2.

One of my geldings topped out at 18.1-1/2 - his sire was 17.1 and his dam was 15.0.

Whatever they are at 2, add a hand for an estimate to their fully mature (6-7 y/o) height.

It’s the 24 month height, not just being 2, that you add 1h to. I’m sure he’s grown since 24 months which I assume was at least 4 months ago, likely closer to 6.

But end result yes, no matter where in his 2yo year he is, he’s not done growing up. He will really start filling out in the 4-5yo range.

I got a 5 month old colt wishing to ensure it didn’t top out over 16.3-17h. Parents were 16.2 and 16.3. He ended up almost 17.2 at age 7, size 5 shoe, and weighed (on a scale) 1650#…

Geldings grow and grow and grow for a long time. You may need a firefighter’s ladder!
