AA barns with lesson / lease horses - turnout inquiry - San Juan Capistrano area or N County San Diego CA

Partner and I seem to be bouncing around the idea of moving back to Southern California at some point in the next 6 -12 months from the PNW for family, work, among other reasons.

We moved to a relatively unhorsey (for H/J riders) area of the PNW and was riding with a wonderful trainer up here til February of this year (2022) when schedules just didn’t pan out and the commute to the barn was an hour each way with a tricky work schedule. Wouldn’t have been a problem but facility was not heated and didn’t have the best set up for me to bring the old laptop and do work while “on-site” as I have done at previous barns on the East Coast and in California.

We used to be in LA where I rode and leased for ~ 7 years and I know a few of the barns at the OC Fairgrounds, but I realllllly don’t like the facility there (loud, hot, footing is questionable), but the Sabos were excellent instructors and they had quality lesson horses as I would supplement my LA H/J riding with dressage lessons with the Sabos.

Not sure where we will end up (southern OC county like San Juan Capistrano or around Encinitas), but would like the following:

  • high quality instruction (dressage rider turned jumper rider in her 20s, now 31) that is good with AA’s who ride well but are occasionally chicken shit - a barn that actually acknowledges and focuses flatwork & conditioning
  • lesson horses and / or partial & eventually full leases
  • prefer jumpers, but I recently rode an aging junior hunter up here in the PNW and LOVED it / him (don’t love hunter horse prices tho). Also very open to Eventing barns.
  • having leased in LA County - I am fully prepared for ~$2,500/ month full training board eventually, so price is not so much of a factor at this time
  • I don’t plan to purchase for a few years (so out of riding shape!), but I don’t want to own a horse without a facility with SOME guaranteed daily turnout that is more than 1 hour. I grew up in the Mid Atlantic with ample turnout and I sure as hell don’t love the idea of spending mid 5 figures + on a horse that doesn’t get to be a horse outside.

I suppose I could be ok with lessons and partial leases at facilities without turnout options, and would plan to move barns upon purchase of an animal at some point in the future…

Asking in advance of moving so we can target our house purchase search to specific areas - we have no timeline, so I want this move to be very intentional. My partner is doing the same with surf breaks :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

thanks in advance, all!

Since you aren’t buying for the time being, maybe modify the thread title to show you’re really looking for school/lease horses right now.

There’s a recent ISO post on the Facebook Plaid Horse Thermal Classifieds asking for trainer recommendations for that area. Maybe try doing the same? You’ll get a lot of quick responses there. Everyone here in SoCal checks that group all the time.

Good luck! I have family in San Clemente. It’s a great place to live.

I don’t know if its feasible for you work wise but Moorpark / Ventura County in general has a lot more places with turntout, some with dry pasture or even irrigated pasture. Lots of excellent trainers too.

Edited!

I will check out Thermal Classifieds more closely - that post sounds like they’re looking for similar things.

My old trainers in LA are also a resource, not that the relationship ended negatively when I moved to the PNW, but I am looking for a program little different now that I am a bit older and have more disposable income.

ughh I know - partner and I float this idea around quite a bit. Mostly because I don’t love the overwhelming tract home vibe of OC and parts of San Diego county. The homes overall are (to me) nicer and more structurally interesting north of LA.

If we end up North of LA county - Santa Barbara would be the likely landing spot work wise.

Moorpark I hear has some really fantastic trainers … off to browse Zillow and Google Maps commute times

Moorpark to SB isn’t really a do-able daily commute. But there are certainly nice barns around SB and Santa Ynez areas. And SB is gorgeous.

well aware sadly - I lived in Hermosa Beach in Los Angeles for 7+ years and have spent more time than I care to remember on the 101, the 405, the 5, the 10 and the 110. blehhh

I feel like i want the ‘best’ situation and don’t want to have a barn commute over 30 mins - I know I know don’t live in CA if you want green turnout.

Let’s say I lost that battle on long term CA living (that damn excessive sunshine tax).

I think I can at least come to the table to my partner with some neighborhood stipulations. If I am giving up 10% of my income for CA state taxes yet again, I’m gonna have a GREAT barn and little barn commute!

Santa Barbara to Santa Rosa Valley (near Moorpark) is about 55 miles. You can take the train from Camarillo or, I think, Moorpark. Depends on your tolerance for driving/commuting. If you lived someplace like Oxnard, you’d be closer to SB and also within range of the Moorpark area.

I have become fairly fond of the Santa Rosa Valley/Moorpark/Camarillo area. Some nice restaurants. Definitely cooler than the San Fernando Valley.

Not freeway miles though and most barns are 10 min+ from downtown Moorpark in one direction or another. That’s a 3 hr roundtrip commute easy. Not remotely doable on a daily basis.

If work is in SB, I’d look at local barns or Santa Ynez area.

Since I lived on the West side and South LA county in the Beach Cities, my experience with the valley and the middle areas between LA and SB is likely rather limited to select experiences I had when I was younger and thought I was more fun than I actually am

I’d like to see how I feel now north of 30 about Santa Rosa Valley/Moorpark/Camarillo areas.

Deep in my soul I feel that we will likely end up in south OC or SD County … but I am loving the suggestions to expand what we are considering.

It’s a good area, you are close to lots of cool places and beaches plus a ton of open space for hiking, trail running, mtn biking and good trail riding. Plenty of vets, farriers and board options, including pasture. And there are local shows to go to, with A shows not far away. If you plan correctly you don’t have to live in your car. And it’s way cheaper, or at least there are much cheaper options so you have a choice.

imho, the area between TO and Santa Ynez is the best horsey area in So Cal by a long shot. Maybe even as far north as Arroyo Grande.

Actually 55 miles is what my phone told from where my horse is in the SRV to what it decided Santa Barbara was. But YMMV. Literally. :grinning: And the horse parts of Moorpark are a bit further out, though not much. And there is traffic. Sometimes awful traffic in or on the way to (why La Conchita, why) Santa Barbara.

I recently drove from horse to Solvang and it was 90 miles, so the 55 miles SRV–>SB makes sense. And I got lucky and did it in 90 minutes via the route that goes past Lake Cachuma.

Santa Ynez is horsey but so hot in the summer.

If I won the lottery, I’d be in Rancho Santa Fe.

@Peggy Did you move?

@Bristol_Bay No. But my horse did.

I didn’t say the distance was wrong, I said it wasn’t freeway miles. which it isn’t. I’ve done that drive many, many times and it is not a reasonable commute.

@Bristol_Bay - do you have barn recommendations in Rancho Santa Fe?

Without giving too much info that is a location we are actively looking in. DINKs who both work in tech so, yeah…

feel free to private message me!

Sorry, no, I don’t. But there are plenty in NSD Co. It’s just a dream of mine to have a ranch style house with room for my retired horse in the backyard.

oh man that does sound amazing. I’ve seen properties like that - and then I look at the $13m price tag online and wonder why I wasn’t born rich. No amount of DINKing helps LOL. Lottery, yeah.

I don’t know terribly many folks in SoCal that keep horses at “home” outside of like Norco and Palos Verdes, and some parts of the valley in Los Angeles. Sad - my neighbors growing up in NJ kept their retired OTTBs at home on 5+ acres.

True. You have to get to the 101. And parts of the 101 on the way to Santa Barbara are fake freeway.

Not something most people would want to do 5 days a week for normal working hours. And I have no idea if it’s worse one way or the other at various times of day.

When I worked in Santa Monica, I had a colleague who commuted from Montecito. Daily. I do think he had a schedule where he didn’t start before 10 am, but I could be wrong.

For a mere $1.9M…
