AAs of the $40K and under market: what was your shopping experience like?

I do see some softening at this price point in the market. FINALLY pulled the trigger on the new husband horse I’ve spent about 18 months looking for. Did what everyone on COTH says and “bought the brain”.

Horse is unknown breeding but I’d say draft/DHH or draft/Fresian, big and solid with some flair to movement. A western trainer I really like bought him and his brother at auction as 3 and 4 year olds and started them. Said they were too big and flashy for her clients but I got first dibs and bought the older one.

He’s 5 now but the most sane, calm horse I’ve ever had in my barn. $13k for me but brother went for $17k.

Brain is everything!

Especially for a husband horse (says the woman who would love to be able to relate and wishes my husband would show any* interest in riding, but who gave up decades ago…)

I almost lost my husband when we had to retire his oldster. He had topped out skill-wise, and his horse was kinda a salty senior who was fine with trail riding but gods forbid you ask him to do something like go smoothly past the gate or not cut a corner in the arena. After we retired that one, husband didn’t want to take lessons on any of my spicier horses and I wasn’t about to let him faff around on the trails and kill himself.

So I just went and got this guy, and since then husband has taken dressage lessons and having so much fun. It’s been a real revelation to him that a horse can be more than stodgy curmudgeon and actually want to expend energy and learn new things!
