Which vaccine do you recommend for rhino/abortion? Is this one any better or worse than any other one? My mare is 4 months today, so I have a little time. Also, on another thread someone mentioned vaccinating herdmates as well–is that correct? She’s turned out with one other horse, so it wouldn’t be a problem to vaccinate him as well if it’s necessary.
maybe read these articles before you vaccinate, I found them when I searched for vaccines myself and was told that the virus mutated and it is somehow even dangerous to vaccinate:

As far as I know (and in conversation with my vet), there are only 2 that produce a strong enough immune response to be considered vaccines for pregnant mares. These are Rhinomune and Pneumabort.
Many people report site reactions from Pneumabort, and I have had that problem with a mare of mine. She developed a significant reaction which had to be drained.
I now use Rhinomune exclusively with no problems.
I only use Prodigy. Makes me feel better.
We also use Rhinomune and have for several years with no problems.
When there was a Rhino outbreak a few years ago I worked for an equine vet at the time and all of the major vet hospitals and all of the publications we got at the hospital regarding the outbreak strongly recommended Rhinomune (and only Rhinomune) as it’s a modified live virus.
I have never had a problem with using Pneumabort K or Rhinomune.
Same here. IME it has fewer reactions than the Pneumabort.
Hm. Prodigy says it protects against EHV-1. Pneumabort contains 2 strains of the disease. Is having two strains that much better? Both are killed, which I prefer (bad experience with a pregnant cat getting a live virus vaccine).
Any thoughts on vaccinating pasturemates at the same time as the pregnant mare?
I’ve been recommended the same vaccine from the R&R vet who is overseeing 2 of my mares. But, if you ask various vets from various practices and even within the same practice, you’ll get a variety of answers. So really it came down to what was comfortable with me. I chose to go with Rhinomune
Bumping to get an answer on my other question–should you vaccinate the pregnant mare’s pasturemates at the same time?
This is my first year doing this, but my vet prefers Pneumabort. So far, no site reactions at all, not even an iffy suggestion.
Of the 2 geldings with her, only 1 is also getting a flu shot (not Pneumabort), because he might travel between now and birth. The other gelding just won’t.
The 1 gelding only got the flu shot in the Spring and Fall, like a normal horse, not a shot every 2 months like she gets.
I use prodigy now. I had site reactions in one mare several times with the Pneumabort and she already HATED needles.

Maybe this will help answer your questions.

We use Prodigy. Glad to see the AAEP saying that the killed vaccine is recommended for broodmares. I have always wondered if we were getting sufficient efficacy from the killed vaccine. Never had any issues, just curious.
My vet specifically said "stay away from Ft. Dodge products (pneumabort) he prefers “Prodigy” from Intervet.
I will be using Intervet’s Prodigy this month.
It sounds like Prodigy is a pretty clear winner. I think I’ll go with that one.
Vaccinating other pasturemates?
So now i’m curious as my 4month pregnant broodmare lives w/ my mini donkeys…should i be vaccinating them as well w/ the abortion vaccine?
Hmm, I think I’ll give the mare Prodigy and use another EHV vaccine on her boyfriend, since Prodigy is fairly expensive and he probably doesn’t really need it at all.
Pneumabort from Jeffers. Find them at jefferspet.com and go to the equine section. To be given at 5-7-9 months. Easy IM injection, keep it refrigerated. inexpensive.
