About J.C. Stallion Breeding Book Caps

Interesting.

The Jockey Club may not have the last say in limiting Stallion book numbers. I know nothing about Kentucky politics. Might it pass? Does anyone know if Kentucky politicians would think it wise to cheese off the Jockey Club?

No opinions at all from those in Kentucky?

Not a KY resident anymore. But here’s my guess… contradicting the Jockey Club is not as concerning as placating your large political donors (my guess only…certain stud farm owners who have the ear ($$) of state congressmen…who want their young stallions to breed as many mares as possible before maximizing profits, cutting losses and selling them overseas…thus influencing state reps to vote accordingly).

I am a small breeder. I am in favor of sensibly limited books. Might I get shut out of a popular stallion? Yeah. But I think more mares trickling down to mid market stallions (especially 3rd, 4th year sires vs the Hot New Things) could be beneficial in the long run.

Heck, left up to me, I think stallions shouldn’t be allowed to produce registered offspring until age 5. That would incentivize racing stallions into their 4-5 yo year, instead of rewarding the “race” to 2yo-3yo G1 straight to the shed. Those injured 3yos retiring to stud can still retire…but have to sit on the shelf until age 5. If breeders still crave them after a year+ at grass, they will get used; if they are passed over by successful, sounder older stallions as “hot new thing” retiring that year, I don’t see that as a bad thing.
