I have a 5 year old golden retriever who was neutered before his first birthday. He is now 5. Hubby was playing with him in the grass when he rolled over for belly scratches and we noticed a 1cm hole near his neuter site. Anyone ever heard of this? It was not large (1cm long, 1/2cm deep I’d guess), drainage was not clear (snotty appearance) hubby is freaking out and took him to emerg vet. Any thoughts while I wait for a call about my pup?
My immediate thoughts were maybe he got bit by a bug or thorn and this is the reaction.
It sounds like it’s probably not actually related to the neuter site because of the timing, but your guess is as good as mine as to what he actually did to himself. Could have started out as something as simple as itchy skin that he self-traumatized and then the bugs moved in and an abscess formed.
Hope everything work out alright for you and the pup!
Update: ER vet was not sure. cleaned it up, gave us some hibitane shampoo, silver sulfadine, and some light antibiotics with instructions to call our more established vet in the morning.
Dog is currently at the more established vet getting blood pulled and an x-ray to confirm the hole was not caused by bladder stones getting trapped in his urethra and working their way out of his skin. He had a rectal exam which came up with nothing.Dog has no fever, no change in pee stream, no change in personality so I am still thinking (hoping?) an abscess that will clear up with additional antibiotics from our main vet. So far symptoms are just the hole and some tissue swelling near the neuter site which could be old cellulitis.
Will report back when he’s home from the second vet (insert flying money emoji here)
Update: Imaging produced no signs of foreign body/object in the hole or surrounding tissue. Blood comes back tomorrow. We upped the antibiotics to include a broader spectrum. For now it’s keep it clean and wait and see until they call with blood results and to let the antibiotics kick in.
Hoopoe: that’s what I thought too but alas, nothing is in the hole…
Would a photo be helpful for any more suggestions?
the bot may have already dropped out leaving behind a pussy hole
other thought would be a very very delayed suture spit
Purulent. The word is purulent. Not pu**y. Because, well, obviously.
Hope your dog is feeling better OP!
You can say “pu$$y”, but you can’t spell it. Yeah, we use purulent. It’s just a prettier picture on paper.
