Ace

Before I consult my vet, I wanted to check here since it’s a Sunday. I just body clipped my horse and its always unpleasant with him being sensitive in many areas. The twitch only works so long and I don’t always like to use it. So, I’m thinking about Ace. Or so I’ve heard it called that. I’m not real educated on it as I’ve never used it in the 20 years of owning horses. Is this only given by IV? Can it be given orally or IM? Or is there something else that can be given that WILL work? Thanks!

Ace (Acepromazine) IS a tranquilizer.
It can be given orally, IM or IV.
Talk to your vet.

Demorsedan gel, an oral sedative from your vet. I always have a tube or 2 on hand. Takes effect in about 30 min. Great for body clipping.

Thanks! After doing research on this last night helped broaden my knowledge of both of these; Acepromazine and Demorsedan.

It’s actually called dormosedan. Works great, dosage under the tongue is important though. Or the injectable can go IM (or IV.)

Ace has a rare side effect of penile paralysis in geldings and stallions. Just something to keep in mind for boy critters. Ace can go orally, IM or IV. There are even granules you can add to feed.

Best to just ask your vet what he or she feels would be appropriate for the job you have!

Yes, either way I need to consult my vet on all this when he comes in the next few weeks for spring shots, coggins, teeth etc. Good to know about the Ace for geldings, did not know that.

Vets often heavily sedated for teeth. Could you clip him at that time?

Might wear off depending on how long it takes to do the teeth and how much clipping.

Ask the vet show you how to do a simple IM injection in a safe place. Something you should know even if you really don’t think you’ll ever need to.

Typically do, but I am not there for that vet visit typically or have the time to do the clip that day. But good thought!

Tt might wear off is what I am thinking too. I get my vaccines from my vet and i give them myself to space them out. I will discuss with him if there is a preferred location if I do IM.
