This worked like a charm for me last summer when I started breaking out from my helmet. However, you do sometimes get strange looks from your barn mates when a pantiliner falls out of your helmet!
Whatever it could start a trend! I got funny looks for wearing ski goggles while winter hacking, but after a few really cold windy days, everyone thought it was a great idea!
Wash your face before and especially after you ride. In the summer, I always douse my forhead with water after a ride, because I can feel my skin crackling from dried sweat. Or keep face wipes in your tack trunk.
If you have really bad acne, I swear by Clean & Clear Advantage Acne Spot Treatment. It has Salicylic Acid but doesnāt overdry your skin. Reduces size and redness in a day. Good stuff. 
Clean/deodorize your helmet. I like the Charles Owen sprays, and my GPA Pro has the removable liners that I can throw in the wash and dryer.
- go to dermatologist, he will suggest probably a weak topical prescription or acne wash
- clean your helmet, and when you take it off, let it air out before you put it back in your trunk or helmet bag
- also try to avoid chemical and scented products when you clean itājust wash over with a damp cloth (from water) after your ride and let it air out to dry. when you use products that have scent oils and such in them to make your helmet smell nice, itās going to stay in the helmet. so when you sweat, those oils kind of come out again and get mixed in, rub into your skin, and voila, youve got a bunch of new oils and bacteria to cause acne. also try to avoid facial washes that are perfumed, for the same reason.
Please be careful applying any kind of chemical product to your helmet. Not only could it cause a serious reaction with your skin, it could seriously compromise the integrity of your hatās materials. I would strongly caution anyone against the use of most household products on the inside of a helmet, unless this was cleared by the manufacturer. Or unless your replacing your hat every warm seasonā¦
If youāre really worried about the panty liners, you could always cut off the rounded parts & make it just a long rectangle - I think Iāve seen someone selling helmet liner things (pretty spendy) - you could just say it was one of those if it slipped off :eek:!
I suggest something like the helmet cleaner that CO makes and a trip to the dermatoligest. Also, donāt wear any makeup when youāre riding. Or if you do, wear something thatās more like a tinted moisturizer - something thatās very light. I know a girl that used to wear pretty heavy make up to cover up her acne, even when she rode, and not only did it make her acne worse, it ruined her helmet. :no:
Use your regular everyday deodorant . Lightly run it along your hair line or around the problem area. You will reduce or eliminate breakouts.
I recently bought $150 acne treatment. Its called Differin and requires a prescription. I am also a fan of Clean and Clear Advantage, its great. The Differin is actually working tho and entirely clearing up everything. btw, dont waste your money on proactiv. its garbage, IMO.

Funny back before my course of Accutane Differin did nothing for my acne. It actually made it a little worse b/c it dried out some spots and made others even more oily as my skin overcompensated. I still have like 12 tubes of it in my closet somewhere that I never used (my derm kept giving me samples). Proactiv helped A LOT though. I still use proactiv for maintenance post accutane. Itās always interesting to me how different skin types react to different products.

I agree, Proactiv was a waste of money for me. I am supposed to put Duac on during the day and Differin on at night, although I have slacked off because its about $275 for both meds:no:
Im glad I pretty much out grew the acne stage of life. What got me through it was a simple, religous system. I always sprayed the inside of my helmet with lysol (generic works just as well) after each ride (at the end of the day that is, I always wear my helmet till everything is riden). You can also get it unscented! I would leave it face up in my trunk or hang it in my locker to dry till the next day. Every month in the sumer and 2x through out the rest of the year I would use car upolstry cleaner (resolve) that foams and has a stain lifter scruber on top. Just follow the directions on the bottle. It was gental on my skin and helmet, and the amount of grime that owuld surface with make you gag! It kept my GPAs clean and fresh smelling. For in between and after rides I kept baby wipes every where (they are perfect for cleaning tack, bits, everything!) and would just wipe my face, arms, everything!

I am having a serve breakout from the Charles Owen helmet cleaner from wearing a wet and sweaty helmet at the horse show all weekend in the rain! Looking for suggestions on how to clean my helmet since it was like oozing black ink when I took it off after getting being subjected to a flat class in a torrential downpour. My skin didnāt burn but is very red and sensitive and I have 20 little white heads when I otherwise have clear skin. Witch hazel has always worked wonders!
Oxy wipes or face cleaning wipes ā¦ my daughter keeps them in her backpack & cleans her face with them after riding.
I always just use plain old unscented baby wipes. I keep them in my bag that I carry back and forth to the barn. They are perfect for a quick face, neck, whatever is funky cleaning and they go right in the trash. I usually buy them by the case (of the refills) at BJās. I usually break out only in the summer, so I keep two helmets so that I can switch into one and I take the other and give it a good cleaning.
In my barn (South Florida, where this is a year-round condition) we have even converted the men to using pantiliners in the front of their helmets. No awkwardness; they think we are brilliant!
