ew. i know its gross but i tend to breakout where my helmet goes, & it gets worse & worse. wwhat do you guys do?
Keep your helmet cleanā¦ I know sweat/makeup can make both the helmet and your skin really nasty.
Going to the derm. is probably the best. Thatās what I did. No problems now!

Febreze Anti-Microbial!!
Spray it in your hat (especially right there at your forehead) till itās WET, blot with a paper towel to get out the majority of moisture (and the towel will be brownā¦ urp).
One more light misting and let dry overnight, NOT in your trunk. No air circulation in your trunk.
Pimples, acne, are caused by bacteria. Thereās LOTS living in your helmet from sweating and general closeness.
Also try to leave your helmet upside down in blazing sunlight if you get the opportunity. Nothing kills the little germies like good olā sun!
Both techniques do wonders for āthe funkā, too.
Be careful of the Charles Owen hat cleaner stuff. One of my friends was having the same problem you are so she figured sheād fix it right up with the CO. Ended up having a worse rash at the same site that took weeks to go away! It was a chemical burn of sortsā¦

Wear a clean bandana when schooling. My helmet is over three years old now and doesnāt smell at all, plus you can throw the bandana in the washing machine between rides.
Also I second going to the dermatologist, itās amazing what they can do for you. I need to get back to mine shortly.
I wash my face before and after riding. Oxy or Stride wipes in your trunk are more than enough.
Stick a panty-liner in the front of your helmet. Discard after each use. If itās a particularly hot day, change it part way through the day.
This absorbs the sweat and keeps the area clean.

Mav, that is probably a very good idea but I sure wouldnāt want to be riding in mixed company if the pantyliner started to slip down my face! :eek: A little awkward, no? :lol::lol:

Would not recommend putting helmet in the sun for long periods of timeā¦this will weaken it and make it less safe.

I ran a course of Accutane (aka poisonā¦but it really does clear your skin up) b/c I had had mild/moderate persistent acne for 7 years. After that my skin was perfect but I would still get some small break outs along my forehead in the summer. I just started keeping those face wash pads in my trunk (you can buy them in the face wash aisle of pretty much any store) and using febreeze antimicrobial on my helmet. Havenāt had any problems since.
Going to your derm is a good idea too, though. Just make sure itās a good one. One of mine had me on antibiotics for my acne for 7 (!!!) straight yearsā¦I was too young to know how wrong that was.
Definitely wash your face or use disposable face wipes after every ride in warm weather. It helps significantly.
Agree with the dermatologist suggestion, but also caution that you find a good one. I too was put on antibiotics for a long period of time thinking that was just how they treated all acne! I agree with disinfecting your helmet as best you can after every use. If your skin gets irritated with the febreze spray, you can try just putting witch hazel or alcohol in a spray bottle and using that instead. Just try to let it dry completely before its next use. Troxel makes a removable washable helmet liner that comes complete with Velcro strips to keep it in place inside your helmet. Also a fix for an otherwise great fitting helmet that has gotten too big as the liner padding has compressed. A lot less $$$ than a new GPA or GR-8 etc. at around $11.

Yes, that would be awkward. I suggest a really great fitting helmet and the kind of pantyliners with lots of āstickyā on the back. Iāve never seen one fall out, but thereās a first time for everythingā¦
I always spray staright rubbing alcohol around the inside of my helmet wherever it touches my head. Works wonders, and you KNOW the alcohol is going to kill germs, lol. Quite a bit cheaper than anything else, as well.
yup, hose it with alcohol and let it dry in open air completely. I did the panty liner thing when I was riding multiple horses and day in grueling heat and I was constantly putting a wet helmet back on my head which gave me a rash and just plain felt nasty! Also little face wipe things work well and help refresh you after a hot sweaty ride. Even handi-wipes work in a pinch.

I use alcohol in the spray bottle too! works great!
I use mild soap and water on my helmet when cleaning and then letting it air dry on the counter (aka, not in a tack trunk) completely.
To prevent or stop acne, especially where the helmet goes. I used plain ole tea tree oil from a drug storeā¦same stuff as the botiques, just in a generic bottle. I just dab on AM and PM with a qtip and it stops the acne. I have sensitive skin and this works greatā¦no peeling and the redness goes away asap.

Do these only fit in the Troxel helmets? I have a CO Hampton that is slightly too big and this sort of thing might help me.

Donāt know about the Troxel ones but my tack store keeps fitting pads in stock. Theyāre very thin but are perfect for someone who is exactly in between two sizes. They gave me mine for free. It inserted under the lining and you canāt even tell itās there.
