Activating Your Horse's Core..Hilary Clayton's Book and DVD

Thoughts and/or reviews on this book/DVD set? I have been using some of the exercises from this book that were featured in Dressage Today and I think they are beneficial for my rehabbing gelding. I’m thinking about springing for the book/DVD.

Anyone have it? What do you think?

Bought it…DVD is not the best quality, but still okay. I incorporated some, but not all into our repetoire. But I think it is more important for a horse in rehab than one in regular work where the appropriate and correct work can address much of this.

It is worth getting

I bought it and use it. I found the dvd to be completely different material and more depth. It is useful in developing the neural pathways, so the muscles learn what to do. It also helped me realize that my horse had some issues that needed more work from the vet/osteopath. I didn’t push my horse because I had a benchmark that something wasn’t quite right. If you do the exercises on a regular basis, it is quite helpful. It doesn’t take long and my horses loved the positive feedback and the carrots. They quickly learned to do the moves on their own.

I had it and sold it because I rarely feed treats from hand and there seemed to be an awful lot of that involved. I know people who do the exercises religiously with their horses but have no idea if they have seen any difference.

I have it and use some of the stretches. Interesting that I found the DVD to be the same material as the text…? Maybe she changed it - I bought mine a the Convention in Orlando when she introduced it.

I use it after almost every ride, after we untack.

I have seen MAJOR changes in my horse’s ability to bend evenly to both sides, and it translates to more evenness under saddle.

He has not gotten mouthy from the carrots, either.

Yes, having tried the exercises, I expect it may be useful for stretching the horse with stiffness issues.

I’m not convinced that is AS effective for “activating the horse’s core” as is (correct) ridden or lunge work.

Have it, agree that dvd is poor quality. Agree there is too much involvement with treat feeding (and if I did all the exercises, I’d need five pounds of carrots a day!). Did it for about a month. It just took too much damn time. I ride after work with a long commute and usually give my horse at least an hour and a half under saddle (lots of walking), so I just can’t spare an extra half hour or so daily to follow all the exercises. I do some stretches that the chiropracter and massage therapist gave me.

It sounded like a good idea. It’s not very realistic in practice, IMO.

Zombie thread I know … Does anyone have a copy they would be wiling to loan or sell? It sounds like this is a great rehab resource, but I hesitate to drop $60 on it.

Bought it and used it in 2016 when my horse was recovering from a major accident and surgury (tip fracture of right front coffin bone and arthotomy for removal). Rehab facility also performed the exercises, in addition to a multitude of other therapies (treadmill, ultrasound, laser, electrostim, magnetic stim, theraplate, walking over cavalletti). I think it helped my horse to become even and flexible and toned her core to ready for me to ride her again. I continued to use the exercises through her rehab, but have not used them in the last two years since moving the horses home. Thanks for the reminder.
