We think Banamine was cause for triggering my guy’s accute failure, as nothing else had been given but that. He is a former racehorse and the hospital assumed he had underlying kidney damage from his life at the track, maybe had a virus at the time we administered the banamine. He was able to return to normal levels within a week and now it’s just about avoiding NSAIDS as much as possible and finding alternatives. We now use Buscopan for any colic and maintain muscle and joint pain with adequan, legend, Bemer, bodywork, etc. We also stripped back any unnecessary supplements. Keeping it simple and hope we can prevent future damage as much as possible know the damage is present. I’m glad to know about it now, versus finding ourselves unaware, treating him otherwise, and it resulting in something much worse. All vets and barn management are aware that he can’t get bute or banamine, and we travel with our own vet approved drugs. Hope this is helpful!

I wonder if your horse was exposed to a pathogenic bacteria when injected with the vaccine?

My friend’s horse had a reaction to her vaccines (fever and had neurological symptoms). I felt so guilty because I was the one who ordered the vaccines, but all my horses were completely fine after their vaccines, and all her horses were fine after the vaccines, except for the one mare. I think she is no longer going to vaccinate that particular horse because her reaction was so severe. It certainly made me really nervous vaccinating my horses this fall, but again, everyone was fine. Her mare was sick for about a week.

It could have been a reaction to banamine. It’s definitely possible that you gave it too many days in a row. Or your horse may have a pre-existing kidney disease that was worsened by the use of banamine. It’s difficult to say, but now that you are aware of the issue, you can avoid that drug moving forward.

Wanted to chime back in - I have been in a state of terror the past year about vaccinating my boy as he colic-ed after just about everything when he was so so so sick for a year. My vet is now recommending banamine in the morning of the vaccination, and then a dose of 15 tabs of Benadryl iin the evening. We will be trying this next week with the dreaded rabies vaccine.

That’s good know about the Bucospan for colic in the future …and yes …we now have to avoid any bute /Banamine / Equioxx etc unless absolutely necessary…and even then the vets at New Bolten said there are other options if needed.

The confusing part is that I’ve owened her for close to 9 years now -she’s been getting vaccinated since we imported her as a 4yr old, never had issues other than a sore neck maybe early on, and she’s certainly had banamine before in consecutive days in a row without incident…New Bolten said she was given completely appropriate doses that normally shouldn’t cause a problem…the other hard part is that you can’t really prove one way or the other what the cause was …she was bright , alert and completely normal prior to getting vaccinated …then developed a fever /lethargy and started to go off her feed …got banamine for the fever, then in the next 3 days got impacted and only received banamine 12mls (she weighs 1280)once per day for 5 days as the impaction hadn’t fully resolved until we brought her to New Bolten ….they think the likely scenario is she had a vaccine reaction which gave her a fever and caused her to not feel well and go off her feed , which in turn caused the impaction …she then was getting Banamine in a semi dehydrated state which further taxed the kidneys…it is also possible that the vaccine in and of itself directly caused the acute kidney failure-although rare not impossible.

My regular vet felt as if she must of had an underlying kidney disease-however the Internal medicine specialist from New Bolten said based off her ultrasound her kidneys were enlarged -indicating this was an acute injury …had this been chronic or underlying pathology the kidneys actually shrink.

The good news is that her levels are continuing to go down …her creatinine yesterday is now down to 2.0 !!! And Zoetis is offering some financial support towards her bill which is a relief.

I’m being mindful of her diet , and I started her on a milk thistle supplement for added kidney support.

New Bolten is super pleased with how well she is doing and has been very optimistic that she will be ok and return to normal…my regular vet on the other hand is negative and quite the opposite and is saying he worries for her long term , and what will happen when it’s time for vaccines , and all the what if’s …colic, injury etc that would cause her to need an nsaid

Well one thing you might do is consider what vaccines are absolutely necessary and what are ā€˜recommended.’ I absolutely will vaccinate for things that will kill them - rabies, tetanus.

But even here in mid-Atlantic, I won’t vaccinate for Potomac Horse Fever. I’m thinking based on what I’ve been reading that strangles is a waste. I’d look at your program and consider how few you could use instead of all. And, maybe titer blood to check for immunity levels?

That’s what I’m thinking now is doing titers for her prior to vaccines now …we had been doing Flu/Rhino twice per year as she is a show horse and we wanted her protected …perhaps that could be reduced to once /year based off titers ?? …I have already done away with Potomac , we haven’t given the strangles …the only other thing to consider would be botulism-this mare in particular doesn’t get round bales due to her asthma but my vet said they still could potentially get it from baled hay or even from spores in the soil if I understood him correctly …his stance was that if they contract botulism it’s almost always fatal -so that’s why we gave it.

Yes I would not quit rabies or botulism.

Did you change the manufacturer or brand of vaccine compared with previous years?

I don’t think so …I think my vet has been using Zoetis for awhile now I’m not entirely sure though

Since it wasn’t mentioned: did she have access to any Maple trees? Their bark and wilted leaves can cause acute kidney failure.

No …she gets turned out in our arena and there aren’t any maple trees in the vicinity

Glad she is doing better! This can be so scary to go through. We’re cutting out some vaccines too. My guys don’t go anywhere & are at home so if we end up with anything the vet or the farrier brought it here.

With diet change if needed & paring down unnecessary supplements & vaccines it can make a huge difference. I don’t understand why your vet is so doom & gloom unless they had a kidney case that just kept going downhill. Sounds like you are definitely out of the woods & just maintaining things.

Thank you …yes it definitely was very scary…but fingers crossed we’re out of the woods and just need to maintain and be cautious in the future …I’m trying to simplify with her diet -no unnecessary supplements and just keeping her happy and eating ! I don’t get why my vet is still so negative either …maybe like you said he’s had one not go well.
