I recently purchased this Steve Flick training saddle. It was a crazy good deal and I know that Steve’s saddles fit my horse really nice. I really need a back strap though. Can I attach a back strap to that back d ring? Or will I need to have a saddle maker cut slots in the skirt? Thanks in advance!
Are you asking about adding a flank cinch to that saddle?
The picture is fuzzy, can’t see it quite right, but it doesn’t seem to have a way to attach a flank cinch to it?
That front rigging is set forward at 7/8 and that would require a flank cinch, you are right, for most other than light, slow riding.
When building a saddle rigging, the flank cinch attachment, even if in the skirts as you mention wanting one installed, generally is reinforced up to the tree, not just pulling on the skirt.
I doubt that you can attach a flank cinch to the ring on the back.
That ring is not meant to hold a flank cinch, is set too far back and not reinforced for that.
That looks like a using saddle, strange that it doesn’t come with a flank cinch already, especially with the front cinch set at 7/8.
Do run it by a saddler and see what they can tell you.
I actually haven’t received it yet. But from the photos I can’t seem to see a spot to attach one.
Will be interesting to see if it has one or not, once you get to see the saddle itself.
Any good saddle shop can help you, once you have the saddle, find the best way to add that to it.
Have you tried contacting the saddle maker directly?
You can do that once you have the saddle.
It may even have a serial number you can reference.
Looks like you will need to have a saddle maker either make a slot in the skirt, or add another D ring in the correct location for a rear cinch.
The rear D-ring on your saddle appears to be for a crupper or something similar. It is way too far back to be suitable for a rear cinch … unless you’d like to start your own bucking horse string.
I wouldn’t do a slot in the skirt for a flank cinch, need to just have a ring added that solidly anchors it. I Know you sometimes see them in a slot in the skirt but that’s there for decorative reasons, not really to take any weight. I can’t imagine the thing won’t have such a ring when you get it…
