Additional fiber for dogs on raw diet?

For the dog owners here that feed a raw diet, what is a good way to add fiber?

My rescue Wire Fox Terrier has been doing well on Nature’s Variety patties, but I have sensed for a while that he needs more fiber in his diet (based on how his poop looks). Any ideas?

canned pumpkin

Ah, I saw that mentioned in the thread about firming up stools. A quick google search reveals it is good for both firming and softening. So how much do you feed? A little with each meal?

Also, just saw your post about your dog – jingling for him.

Pumpkin is great, make sure that it is straight canned pumpkin, not pumpkin pie filler…If you have difficulty finding it , you can used canned sweet potatoes or green beans. Periodically canned pumpkin is hard to get and those two things are nice options.

I’ve been giving my dog canned green beans for extra fiber (per my vet’s recommendations) he’s a 75 lb lab and is getting half a can in the am and pm (1 can/day). At least around here, the canned green beans are quite a bit cheaper than the canned pumpkin

dogs don’t actually need fiber- their GI tracts don’t work like people’s tracts at all. Most dogs on raw diets have tiny, hard pellet-like poops; if your dog has runny poops on a raw diet I suspect something in the raw diet is disagreeing with your dog; maybe try a different flavor or brand?

i add raw sweet potato…thick slice, so they gnaw on it like a bone…goodfor them and helps add fiber

Sams yams are a packaged USA sourced dehydrated sweet potato chew if you don’t keep them around your house. I think it is a good idea that you are adding fiber. Many vets are reccomending this to avoid anal gland issues. Our quest to make very hard stools for easier pick up for us is leading to more anal gland impactions and so forth. Let us know how it goes.

How much bone is your dog getting? Dogs don’t really need fiber, but if the poops are soft, bone will firm them up
