Has anyone given Adequan to their dog this way? I know several injectables are absorbed well with horses this way. Wondered if I could give my little old dog Adequan this way. I have injected her successfully but she always yips. I never hesitate giving horses shots, why is it so heartbreaking to hear your dog cry
No, it needs to be injected.
Lubrisyn can be given orally. It’s hyaluronic acid and meant for joint problems. I give it to my old dog and it helps for
a few days. For pain relief, it should probably be given daily or every couple days.
My ortho vet told my that you can give Adequan subQ. Same needle as when giving a dog insulin. I have been injecting my dogs this way and they barely react. He say it helps in preventing needle shyness when having to inject frequently.
Adequan by mouth would be a waste of $$–it would be degraded in the stomach acid.
Oral HA is a great idea, though.
Have you tried injecting during meal time? I’ve done Cartrophen/Adequan in cats and am currently giving weekly B12 shots to 3 cats and I’ve never had a problem. Always at meal time while they are engrossed in their food, and always with a nice sharp tiny little insulin needle. Maybe check that your sharps are sharp too. Vet tech and I have had trouble with a batch of not very sharp sharps for vaccinating 25+ feral to semi-feral barn cats. That was not a lot of fun. The previous year, no problem.
At any rate, I’d think if needling cats is no issue that there’s something else going on with the needle itself, or some part of your technique.
