Adequan multi dose vial sterility question

If I order the Adequan Multi Dose vial and stick 1 needle in to aspirate the adequan out and fill multiple syringes and then cap the individual syringes with sterile syringe caps.

Is that good practice?

I will be giving the loading dose but instead of 7 doing 10.

Will the adequan’s efficacy be diminshed by keeping it in individual syringes until used ever 4 days?

I always have used the 7ct, but the Multi Dose is slightly less expensive.

Why would you pull up all of the doses at once? Pull them up as needed.

Multidose Adequan contains a preservative and is fine to be ‘open’ at room temperature.

I guess my theory was doing it that way would poke less “holes” and pokes into the top seal of the multi dose vial would =less contamination to the contents.

I know you can wipe an alchohol wipe over the top, but figured what is the difference if I will be using the syringes anyway? Why not pull them out all at once and have it in ready to go syringes of 5ml and only pull out of the vial once.

Someone I know reccd doing it this way and was just wondering.

As far as sterility goes, it’s sort of 1:1 in either scenario. In one you’re puncturing multiple times in to the vial, in the other you’re opening a needle that was sterile until the cap comes off.

Multi-use vials generally contain enough preservatives to keep them viable for a little under 30 days. Nothing is perfect, but in general as long as you use it up within that time frame it should be good. Might be a good question for your vet as well.

The multi dose vial is literally designed to protect it’s sterile contents over time. A syringe is designed to protect it’s sterile contents for minutes.

Leave it in the vial, draw up as needed.

Also, depending on how you store it, sometimes the needle caps can slip back off pretty easily. It’s a 100% unnecessary step. If I were concerned about the bottle getting dirty, I would just use the plastic cap from a syringe case and put it over the top of the bottle 3 or 5 ml caps fit most bottles pretty well. This is what I do when I open a bottle of banamine or sedation, as a bottle usually lasts a while around here.

I can assure you, your vet doesn’t pull up all the doses from a vaccine bottle, bottle of banamine, etc when they pull from a multi dose vial.

Agree with others - leave it in the multi-dose vial and only draw up as needed to administer.

The CDC also agrees. :grinning:

From an infection control perspective, the safest practice is to prepare an injection as close as possible to the time of administration to the patient. This is to prevent compromised sterility (i.e., microbial contamination or proliferation) or compromised physical and chemical stability (e.g., loss of potency, adsorption to the container) of the medication when it is transferred outside of its original container and stored for a period of time before administration.

Another thing to consider with this question is light degradation. IIRC, Adequan comes in a clear vial, so it doesn’t really apply to this specific scenario, but there are plenty of other meds that need protection from light, and are packaged in an amber vial to prevent light degradation. Drawing and storing in a syringe can really screw you in that regard.

Just a whole lot of reasons to not over think it, and leave the med in the vial until needed!

Note that the multi-dose vial is only good for a month. Some people buy the 10-dose and try to use it for 10 months… The manufacturer’s instructions are really clear on this.
