Desperately looking for advice on a good maintenance injectable for my 8 year old preliminary horse. He had a mild tendon injury in May from overreaching on XC and I want to do whats best to keep him sound and happy for a LONG time.
I’ve been told that Legend is best for maintenance for tendon injuries, but my vet is pushing adequan. Personally, I’ve really liked polyglycan in the past.
Curious to hear what everyone else has used to promote healing/comfort/etc for tendon injuries!!
Obviously I really appreciate my vets opinion, but I like to well educate myself before making a decision. And since my boy is only 8, I want to be making the best decisions for the long haul.
Thanks!!
None of those injectables will target soft tissue injury. The best maintenance for prevention of soft tissue injuries is good shoeing and good footing. I’d also add regular hoof balance x-rays, and a long walk warm-up.
I’m in favor of starting Adequan early, but for joint health - not soft tissue injury prevention.
For soft tissue, I would be liking to try other forms of medicines, like PEMF or laser therapy.
Of those three, I have used all at one point for one horse. Legend nor pentosan didn’t show any great improvement. Adequan, unfortunately, was given right before he was prescribed just walking and equioxx. But, I had great result with Pentosan on a previous horse.
Honestly, I would try all three out properly, take meticulous notes about what you see, any changes you notice and then decide what works best since each horse is so different. I did pentosan first since it was the cheapest and in my mind, if it worked, I didn’t spend as much.
Thank you! He is being treated with PRP, potentially ACS instead, and laser therapy. He gets very nervous with the PEMF system so I don’t want to try that while he is injured and has even more pent up energy.
He has beautiful feet, but I’m interested in x-raying his feet to see if he has a negative navicular angle or something of that liking.
