It seems the programmers break the back button every time there’s a board update. When you try to go back there are all kinds of ad links which keep it from working once again. This tends to show up on nearly every platform and has been repeated over and over with every board change.
I have downloaded Ad block. What ads?

I believe it is a problem even with ad block, though I don’t know.
And that is not an option for many of us, and COTH would prefer we see ads - and I actually like to see ads on this site only.
However, several iterations of each page load before the page, which makes it so “back” doesn’t work. Really freaking annoying, and it’s chased a lot of us away from COTH for periods of time in the past when it was broken.
What browser(s)? I don’t see this behavior in Safari.
Not happening at all for me in Firefox with Adblock.
Also not happening for me on IE? No adblock here. Update version 11.0.14.
Work IE 8 - and it’s still a problem here.
I have been here so many hourse beyond full time lately that I haven’t had a chance to check at home. It’s definitely a problem, though. I can’t get it to give me the url, but when I try it changes from a url to “Facebook Cross-Domain Messaging Helper.” Facebook is not blocked here, but it may not be an ad and rather the “join our community” area on the right bar.
Can you update to a current version of IE? Or download a different browser on your work computer?
Is IE 8 even still supported by MS?? I certainly understand the need for some companies to hold on to outdated versions due to compatibility with their own internal software, but I don’t know if it’s COTH’s deal to ensure their website is functional on something that’s nearly five years out of date…
It always starts on work computers but spreads, because a bug is a bug. And it’s definitely a functionality the programmers broke…
If you are all the way back on version 8 of IE, I would definitely guess that is it. They are all the way up to 11 now… It’s also very insecure to be using such an outdated version. Your chances of getting a virus is much higher. They have done exponential improvements in the more recent versions.
You know, except for the security weaknesses found in new versions of browsers all the time.
Seriously - corporate American IT departments love old versions of IT, and it’s not our choice whether or not to change it. And every time a problem started with “it’s your out of date browser” zealots screaming that from the rooftop in the last several years on these forums, it has spread to other browsers and resulted in a website crash.
If you’re actually Chronicle IT, please feel free to share that fact, otherwise you come across as someone who’s holier-than-thou and probably wrong, sticking your nose into other people’s business. Great for you that the site works on your browser, and I hope it continues to do so, but that has nothing to do with the fact that for others it doesn’t.

As for the first comment, yes, exactly, that’s why there are always new versions of browsers because they find new weaknesses and change it accordingly. So, using an outdated browser like 8, you not only have the weaknesses of 8, but also the weaknesses of 9 and 10.
That blows that you can’t update your browser on your work computer, but I find it pretty unnecessary to call me a “holier than thou zealot” when all I am trying to do is help. Especially because you didn’t say anywhere that you couldn’t update, just that you were using an old version. I even asked my husband for you, who by the way does work in IT, if he had any ideas and told you what he told me.
So yeah, good luck with that…
Wow, netg. You first posted about this over three weeks ago and the issue hasn’t “spread to other browsers” in that time. I can’t get the issue to repeat in current versions of firefox, chrome or IE on the computer, or in the Silk browser on my tablet.
I’ve been lucky in that I’ve always had admin rights on my work computers and was really permitted to install whatever software I liked (within obvious limits)…can you ask for the same from your IT guys? Or even just ask for FF or Chrome, citing that some website just don’t work with the outdated version of IE?
I am obviously not COTH IT, but I feel for those guys that provide this free playground for us. At what point should they really spend time supporting out of date software? It’s not like you’re one release behind here…you’re several.

I have no idea what your problem is. This isn’t about you, and your input was not requested.
You clearly have no idea what you’re talking about, so please, your input is unwanted so save your very valuable words for where they’re needed.

Who peed in your Wheaties, netg?
I’m sorry netg, but I’ve checked with the IT crew and basically, it’s not the best use of our resources to support/program for compatibility with new AND outdated software versions, particularly when the problems seem to affect a very limited number of users. I know that’s not any help for you, when the issue affects YOU 100% of the time, but all I have to offer is our apologies.
