Degenerative suspensory ligament desmitis
Degenerative Suspensory Ligament Desmitis…I believe it can more commonly be known as dropped fetlocks.
He is a sorrel, with a beautiful copper penny shine and yep, one heck of a gorgeous head. And he’s very sweet when he’s not uncomfortable!
So cool and what a great way to get kids into a breed!
I had someone buy a bit from me for “pony play” at a moving sale. Had the “pony” try it on and everything.
My mind was blown.
Im going to read this story. I was so impressed about Mr. Ruxer. He and my grandfather graduated from high school together and my grandfather told me that Alvin was voted “least likely to succeed.” Imagine that!! So while I was into saddlebreds at 13 years of age, I began writing to Mr. Ruxer and he was so sweet. He would send me long, hand written letters and photos of all of his stallions etc. I could hardly wait to open each letter on his letterhead. I got so many letters that I started a scrapbook of them which I still have. He always invited our club up to his farm in the spring and Bobby would give us breeding and training tips. I was just in awe.
I have seen horses with that condition. Is it from an injury or is it hereditary?
The latest research indicates that it is hereditary. It’s sad, because he is such a good boy - very nice to ride, and so so well broke. Now to watch him break down further is just a terrible thing.
What an incredible story! I like that Valley View Supreme got a mention. He was one of the studs that I bred my 4-H mare to. Her filly was so feminine and flashy. I sold her as a yearling at the Tattersall sale to an elderly gentleman who said she would be the horse of his old age.
I don’t think that’s the original, I think there was another one where the first post was a whole diatribe about canoeing.
This might be the first canoe thread

I knew of him first from Jasper Engine and Transmission re-manufacturer,
Afterwards through the Saddlebreds
I’m in the “hesitated to open the thread” camp too. Then I thought maybe I was missing a good train wreck and had to check it out.
Welcome to COTH. I don’t have money for horses anymore and can’t do the barn rat on top of full time work life, so I live vicariously here.
I saw some familiar names in this thread. I had a wonderful, handsome, funny, sorrel sabino Paint gelding but had to put him down 7/20/2022 when his left knee finally gave out. He had several King ranch QH in his pedigree. Impressive was his great-great-grandsire but showed up once and my gelding was N/N. Man o’ War is in there once plus one cross so he qualifies as Most Famous. I ran tail-male for sire and dam and they go back to Darley Arabian and Godolphin Arabian. 20+ years ago I found All-breed Pedigee online and it’s a good resource. At that time they had the entire Jockey Club and AQHA databases, and they have been adding since then. Millions of horses, literally. I added my Paint and had enough info to fill in the few holes in the pedigree. I found dozens of photos recently of many of the horses in his pedigree. He has some nice foundation QH lines but he is built like the hundreds of TB ancestors.
Secretariat? My mom was in a lovely assisted living facility on Cape Cod. I stayed in her apartment the week after she died. One of the servers came to chat at the end of lunch one day. She said I was horse person. I never told mom I owned a horse, so maybe the walktrot license plate gave me away. We had a great discussion – she was clearly a very experienced rider. She talked about going over to her cousin’s farm when she was a kid to visit her cousin’s horse. She never said the name out loud. Too much commotion. She finally whispered “Secretariat.” She never rode him, but Ron Turcotte was her best friend.
I love this video. Nothing extraneous, just the race called by Chic Anderson. Watch Secretariat and Sham going down the back straight. Look carefully at their legs and you can see why nobody will ever beat him.
Thanks for the link, Secretariat gives me goosebumps, always has.
