I just found a super cute, slightly built 14 h Welsh pony online…I know people ride short horses sometimes but will him being so delicate make him too small for me? For reference I’m 5’4, 115.
Well first of all not all welsh are equal. If you’re talking about 14 hands you could be referring to a section B welsh pony or a section D welsh cob. If a section D then there is little to no question that it should be able to carry an adult of your size. If it’s a section B most likely it can if it’s not too refinely built. My guess is it can but would it be comfortable for you? I breed and show welsh cobs. I have two 13 hand section C welsh cobs which I have shown and ride and have no trouble with their size or them with mine (5’2", 110 lbs). I prefer a pony with a good bit of heart girth and barrel but that is exactly that, personal preference. I try to follow the 20% guideline and so far the ponies (again almost all cobs, one New Forestx) I’ve had in that height range have all been quite capable of carrying my weight plus tack.

I think if were taller I’d start to look funny on him. It also helps that I have a short torso and a long lower leg, so I’m not towering over him with my upper body. I think the pony you’re looking at would have no issue at all carrying you, but depending on how you’re built, it could affect your ability to balance/look suitable on something that size.
I have a client who just got her second large pony and says she willl never go back to horses. She weighs about ten pounds more than you do. Enjoy your new pony

I’m 5’6". And weigh more than I really would like, but not as much as I could. (It’s a happy medium, I guess) My Haflinger is 14.1. He fits me like a glove. My mare is 14.3 (15 if she stands on tippy toes) and is a sweet ride. I’m pretty long in the leg (but short torso), and love riding the smaller ones. We have a Welsh cob at our barn who is adorable, and about the same size as my Haflinger. I’d say go for it.
I used to ride a 14.1 Welsh/TB, I’m 5’5 and at the time weighed 135lbs. That little mare was a blast! She carted my butt around without a problem and would jump the moon if I pointed her at it!

I sort of grinned over the word “delicate” as my daughter has a Welsh cross that is 13.1. He’s not slightly built. We call him the Baby White Rhino. I’ve owned several Welsh crosses and while all but the White Rhino were very refined, none of them were delicate. Tough as nails & always ready to give anything the old college try.
I think as long as you feel comfortable, the pony should have no problems carrying you.

I am 5’6 127ish and ride a 13.3 Welsh, New Forest cross. Everyone says we look great and I fit very well on him. Who would have thought?
After being introduced to this little sports car and riding him for the past 6 years, I will never go back to a horse. I am a pony convert!!

Adult on welsh cob
I have a 15.3 (16H on a good day) welsh cob - he looks like a small warmblood! I’m 5’4 and 145-150 and I look just fine on him.
If anybody out there is interested he is for sale, we’re located in TX. Since he’s so big I figured there is some welsh cob fanatic that would kill to have a HUGE welsh cob like him. Everywhere we go I’m always stopped with questions on him (OMG is that a Friesian? Is that a Nocturne baby? What is he?) lol it’s great. I’ve always been told we would clean up in the halter arena, but I just haven’t made it to a welsh show with him yet. He’s 9yrs old, showing in training level dressage (schooling first/second level movements) Has done jumpers, hunters and eventing. Great guy, also used in a lesson program and most recently was being jumped by a 9yr old 2’! You can PM me for more information. Too many horses and I need to cut down my herd =)

I have 2 13.1h welsh sec B ponies that I have ridden and a 13.2h sec C cob. I’m 5’3" and was about 140lb and they had no problem with the weight. I mostly do dressage with them and I’m very careful with my upper body (staying still and upright, especially if I’m going to jump - though I don’t do much more than 2’3" if I’m going to jump - I mainly jump x rails if I do). I think it also depends on how you ride (ie - soft with your seat type of rider). I have gained a little weight since then (sigh) and don’t tend to ride them too much anymore as we mostly drive them anyway. I have since then upgraded to 14.1h ponies and will never go back lol!!
Your height and weight would be just fine on a 14h pony, as long as you are a quiet, soft rider. Have fun! Ponies are the best

FWIW, my horse is a 14.1 hand Lipizzan and I am 5’7 with a good number of pounds on you. She is solidly build and carries me around just fine. However for me since I have really long legs for my height and she is small through the barrel, it is a bit hard to ride her (she was supposed to get bigger!!! Both her parents are bigger than her in height and barrel size!). One plus, my balance has gotten really good :). Just make sure the pony is comfortable for you, you get along, etc. and you should be golden.
No one has ever told me that I look to big on her, they all think we are a really cute pair! I am the only one who ever has said anything…
Certainly go try the pony. There’s nothing wrong with an adult riding a pony- lots of re-riders do (closer to the ground, for one thing!). If he fits you and you like him, there’s no problem. Just check him out carefully for pony humor, which is not as funny when you are an adult and know you are a mortal. My mare is 14. 1 1/2, I’m 5’4" ( not going to admit my weight, but not fat) and she fits me great.
Yes, the pony humor. A little trickster is good, a little sh*t is bad. I like the pony personality, that little bit o naughty side, but he’s so safe, I know he is just being playful.

Amen to that. I will never be without a pony.
I’m 5’8", ~140lbs and my heart horse for the last 20 years has been a 14.1 (and 3/4 if you’re counting) h Morgan. His old owner was 6’5" and rode him until he was 8 in 25-, 50-, and 100-mile endurance in the heavyweight division.
I ended up buying a 17h TB, in part because I was getting way too much smack from trainers about looking silly on the pony, but I will always own and show at least one pony. I love those little buggers and they are FAR more fun to ride than my elephant of a TB!
the great news is, is that when you stop riding the transition to driving will be nice and easy.
Another pony advocate here! 5’4" and about 120 and my dude is a 14.1 1/2 GRP. He is a BLAST (when he feels like it) and fits me fine! No one has ever made a comment about me being too big for him.

At 5’4 and 115 pounds you could ride just about anything you chose to. We have a slender built appy mare maybe 14.1 that I hop on to school occasionally( at walk, slow trot only) so she stays tuned up for my daughter. I am 5’9, 155 pounds and I feel like I am riding a fence post. She has no problem with me whatsoever, although I feel like a fool!
