So take my dog to vet this evening for her check-up and lepto vaccine… all is well and then around 9:30pm she starts panting and shaking. She seems fine now but wondering if anyone else’s dogs have had reactions to lepto vaccine?
Lepto actually has a high incidence of adverse reactions. That’s part of the reason why it’s not recommended unless your dog is at high risk.
Hope your pup is feeling better soon! If he gets worse or isn’t better by AM I’d have him checked by a vet to make sure it’s nothing serious.
My dog had her two puppy shots without problems, the third one, a while after the shot, half of her body swelled up big time, had to rush her to the vet clinic for treatment.
The next time around, the vet gave her something first and her reaction was smaller, but still considerable swelling.
So, now she gets vaccines but lepto, with is worrysome, because she is a farm dog and there are many rabbits around here, that carry lepto, but it is what it is.
Horses are not very susceptible to lepto, but I lost a horse to lepto, so am not happy with this, but can’t be helped.
If your dog is reacting to the vaccine, you will just have to take those chances, don’t vaccinate.
Your vet is who needs to advise what is best for your dog.
she’s back to her old self this morning - she is pretty much of a sissy when it comes to discomfort. I live in a townhouse, anytime she goes out she’s always on a leash. I’ve got some wildlife close by but nothing she’s going to get much contact with. I don’t remember her having reactions like this before. She was really out of sorts when she got her lyme’s vaccine too
OP- do you by chance go to Banfield?
If you’re not in a Lyme endemic area I wouldn’t do the Lyme vaccine either, it also has a high risk of serious side effects.
My dog had a reaction to the lepto vaccine when he was a pup. I brought him home from getting his shots, he threw up, as I was cleaning it up I turned around and saw 6 new piles of vomit and he was so swollen in his face and neck that his collar was starting to choke him. I had to rush him back to the vet, which was luckily about a mile away.
I was pretty mad at the vet about it because I had not requested he receive the letpo, only the 5 in 1. They vet did treat him for free when we came back for the vaccine reaction ( 3 trips back to the vet that same day ), but still.
I obviously made sure he never got the lepto again, nor do I let any vet take him “in back to weigh him” anymore. He goes back, I go back. He also gets a shot, I forget exactly what right now but like benadryl, before getting any vaccine.

no, a vet clinic w/ pretty good reputation. why??
Unfortunately, I am in a high risk area for both Lepto and Lyme. My big guy got both vax with no adverse reactions. Puppy will be 6 mos old later this month. Am thinking maybe doing Lepto at 6 mos and Lyme in the spring and separating the vax vs giving two heavy hitters at the same time. THoughts? I will discuss with my vet of course.
In a good 35+ years of all kinds of dogs and puppies, we never had one that reacted to any vaccines, even lepto, that all got.
Guess our luck ran out with this one, she did have a reaction.
If you don’t have a problem, you really don’t need to worry.
Do ask your vet, see what he tells you.
See what your vet is comfortable doing for dogs like yours.
Vets see all kinds of dogs and reactions and truly know better.
I don’t know why any vet recommends the Lyme vaccine as it is pretty famous for not protecting against Lyme and I would definitely not get Lepto for a dog that is an indoor dog that is walked only on a leash.

They’re pretty famous for wanting to vaccinate for everything, even when the vaccines are risky and the pet isn’t high risk for the disease.
I wouldn’t vaccinate an apartment dog who gets leash walked for Lepto. I did mine when we lived in an apt because they had free roam on 20 acres at the barn. But when we changed to a different barn without the woods and pond I quit vaccinating them.

I’m sorting of leaning this way too. Though she’s her old self today and her “reaction” was nowhere as some that I’ve read on her…feel like I may have over-reacted but will confess I am a worry wart when it comes to my girl.
About Adverse Reactions to Lepto vaccine: I just recently had my dog Which is a Shih tzu taken to the vet for his regular checkup and we noticed he wasn’t feeling good or eating after the visit which isn’t like him.We knew something was wrong that night and the very day my dad and I had to drive out of town to the only emergency vet in the state because it was the 4th of July so the local vets were all closed. We bring the shot records with us and we tell them his symptoms and at this point he’s not able to control his “movements” if you know what I mean so they tell us it’s a reaction from the Lepto4 shot he was given and that a dog of his size shouldn’t have gotten that shot anyways because of the risks the vaccine had. They took him to the back gave him fluids and some meds and we thought he was getting better he was trying to move around and drink water but that next morning we woke up and all the symptoms were back again and even worse so we took him to the original veterinary clinic where he got the shots and they were so rude to us and told us that they were gonna charge us for holding him overnight because of how bad it was. Well that night he died under there watch and care all by himself and the veterinarian did a report on the cause of death and told us he died of a “Small liver infection” and that they were “deeply sorry” about the passing of him. His death really hit hard with our family because he was a rescue dog that we had gotten a year ago and he really was my best friend and his death has probably been one of the hardest things I’ve really dealt with because I know that it could’ve been avoided. So now it’s September and we get a card in the mail from the vet to do a check up on our other dog which was the other ones mother and on the card they said we needed to take her in to get her Lepto4 shot.
If your worried pre-med with Benadryl and do the Lepto vaccine separately. We do occasionally see reactions to the Lepto vaccine but it is usually easily treated. We live in a endemic area that is always wet, so lepto is definitely a must for my dogs. After seeing several cases of lepton my dogs will always be vaccinated. It is a terrible disease and zoonotic.
