advice on coat

I’ve arranged to take a stab at hunting with Red Rock in November and I’m starting to wonder if the RJ Classics hunt coat I have isn’t going to be too thin. Would thermal underwear make up the difference, or should I just plunk down the $ and get a melton? If the latter, does anyone know if the Ovation hunt coat or the Shires brand that Dover is now selling would work?

I really like the Shires coats and they are excellent for the price. I think you can get them from their website too.

Well, check the local weather but I survived a long time on a lightweight dressage coat using a vest and long underwear underneath. Guess it depends on if you have room to layer.

That’s good to know. I think I can squeeze some long johns beneath everything else, and the canary vest does seem warm. I guess except for the Deep South, foxhunting is a cold weather activity everywhere, so if that works for you, it might well work for me up there around Lake Tahoe. When I talked to a staff member at Red Rock, she didn’t come right out and say I’d need another coat, but she did suggest I get one of those ear covers that runners wear.

P.S.–That Paint in your profile pic is stunning.

He’s a home bred. I own his mother too. I hunt and event him. He’s 14 now but still keeps me quite entertained with his antics. I led the field with him yesterday, he was good. We’ve had a lot of rain and there were some deep spots and unusual creek crossings to deal with.

Take along a black down vest you can throw over the top - just in case! http://www.landsend.com/ix/outerwear/Outerwear/Assortments=Down-Vests-Fleece/index.html?seq=1~2~3&catNumbers=1028&visible=1~2~1&store=le&merchAsId=271&tab=7 $29.50
I’m not sure I’d invest in a melton coat unless I knew I’d need it for a long time.

Stay Warm

Get out there and have fun! But take it from someone from the frozen north, dress for the cold! The melton would be a great idea, but in any case be sure to layer with polyproplene and wool under your coat and breeches. Anything made of cotten will chill you to the bone at a windy check.

I really like the clothing coats, keep me fresh, specially in winter.
