Advice on keeping a hound and cats?

We have multiple cats, most of which are barn cats with house privleges. I’ve been offered a young Black and Tan female–not a puppy. She’s pretty & seems sweet, but I’m not sure how she and the kittys would mix.

Will the house hound contingent please offer their opinions. Or anyone else is welcome to comment as well.

Thx.

Do you have any idea whether the dog has been exposed to cats? Lots of hounds do just fine with cats; and lots of other breeds want to kill cats.

I think that is an individual dog thing and how they are raised.
I got a retired foxhound that is fine with my cats. But there are about 20 cats on her home farm and it was verboten for the hounds to harass the cats. One year there was a joint meet at the farm and the visiting pack killed a farm cat. That huntsman was fine with allowing his hounds to kill cats so never corrected them for chasing cats.

We have two hounds out of four dogs and three cats. One hound loves her kitties. She sleeps with her kitties, she defends her kitties. One of our previous kitties was her hunting buddy and partner in crime.
Our second hound, a puppy, has learned very quickly to behave around two of the cats. The third cat allows the puppy to play too rough, so that one’s taking a little longer. But he will leave the cat alone when we say so.

Long story short, you can have cats and hounds. Just teach the hound like you would any other dog.

Our hound mix loved his cats/kittens. They would chase each other, sleep together and when we got a tiny one lb kitten she would sit on his head and chew on his ear. IMO hounds are great family dogs, very loving and easy going. The only turnoff with hounds for me is that when their nose gets going their ears/brain shuts off, so our hound was rarely off leash. Putting a recall on them can be difficult.

We are in a state that allows deer hunting with hounds and the deer hounds regularly cross our property and occasionally take up residence in the barn. Have never had one menace the barn cats.

However did have a blue tick coon hound show up and fostered her for over a month. She was way too interested in the cats for my comfort. Never allowed her free range to test her “interest”.

I have two hounds and a housecat - they all get along fine. It helps that my cat is officially the boss of the house and he is very quick to put the dogs in their place. One of the hounds (a black and tan mix) we’ve had since he was a puppy, so he was raised with the cat. The other is a little deerhound that we rescued and she is around 1 yr old. I’m not sure what her exposure is to cats but she’s pretty timid so she was actually scared of our cat at first. Every now and again she tries to play with him, but she’ll leave him alone if he makes it clear he doesn’t want to play. I really think it’s going to depend on the individual dog and cat(s) though. Even though all of mine get along, I still don’t leave the dogs alone with the cat for any length of time, and the cat has a room in the house that the dogs aren’t allowed to go in.

Can you find out if she has had any exposure to cats? I know a lot of people that have hounds and cats together successfully.

I will say if the cat runs she’ll chase, but she doesn’t do anything if she catches them (we address it though and she knows she’s not allowed). For the most part though my cats are all very used to dogs and don’t run.
