oh wow–I just read someone said the EPM isn’t reversible??? Not true. Not true at all. A lot of horses get be positive and have no symptoms and a lot of horses can show lesser exposures and have symptoms—testing helps confirm symptoms but is not a prof positive. But treatment–there is always some individual variance but I’ve seen horses that were staggering and falling down return to normal after treatment.
An update for anyone interested. We had already done high doses of vit E during our push on and strengthen her up period to see if it was severe high end weakness or neuro. It didn’t have any effect. I’ve talked to both the vets at this clinic and both are in agreeance that there’s no way she has lyme or EMP having lived in the dry desert within 45 minutes of this area for her entire live and not being out of state ever. I’m really thinking she had a fall and has some arthritis somewhere along the tracks which is causing the mild neuro symptoms. This would fit the bill with why the chiropractor was so shocked and specifically asked if she had a bad fall the first time I had her done. Her one hip was visibly inches lower than the other. The vet offered some pasture homes he knew of but I declined. She’s been mostly just turned out in the mare paddock and eating hay 24/7 and is fat and shiny. She does often stand at the fence line and watch me ride like she is waiting for me to pull her out. Occasionally I go get on her bareback and ride her around. She seems to enjoy the attention and is quite happy. I had her vetted to be a recipient mare. The vets think she willy carry just fine and structurally everything is sound for carrying both uterine and hip/slight neuro wise. I think this is the good middle ground for us between keeping her forever and burning a hole in my pocket and putting her down. This way she is useful. And this way I can work on getting a RID filly from my RID mare next year. Two chances at it. I think she’ll make an excellent mom. (I do realize ET costs too, it’s something I plan on doing a lot of throughout the years) The karmic joke is she despises my RID mare, but she’s the thing keeping her around now.
A solution, I wish you the best.! I’m dealing with a 15 yr old gelding w ringbone now, and this input from people is food for thought.
