The event itself is flat - there’s a few dinky hills but nothing I would say is terrain.

But this is what I think of when I think terrain - it can be hard to see how steep some of those hills are but there is very little flat ground barring the run thru the dressage and stadium:

That looked awesome! Thanks for sharing!

I don’t know… I’ve always wanted to go gallop on a golf course  But just once, not actually have it become a thing.

Ok
From someone who is here, riding novice. Course is championship height, wide tables, to be expected. Very busy- your horse is going to need to be focused as there are a lot of levels close together. All my tables have flowers in front as a ground line, so the vertical aspect is lessened. We’ll see how it rides- my guess is that it will catch out a few horses/ riders from lack of focus- maybe even mine…
Thanks for the perspective as a rider at the venue, EC! I have several friends there riding in a variety of levels and I honestly wish them (and you!) the best. I know this is the trip of a lifetime for one friend (horse is going to be retired after this season) and I’ve been messaging with her about the course. She is also riding Novice and sent me pictures - so many tables!

Best of luck on your ride and check in with us if you can.

Tryon is actually in the foothills, if you’ve ever been to FENCE it is a far cry from “flat as a pancake”. Now whether or not MB had hills to work with (hard to believe he doesn’t) or didn’t want to spend the resources developing a course that incorporated the hills, who knows.

That course left me shaking my head. If you look in the background you can see lots of other fences are mushed in like peas on a plate. That and the artificial footing? Not XC.
Exactly…I drove around the property last year with a friend who lives just down the road…
Plenty of hilly terrain if they chose to use it correctly…So no where looking like they were going to be ready…no turf being prepped and groomed for safe galloping…
They have had a long drought and then torrential rains…I wouldn t want to risk my pony on the artificial rolled out turf…but then I am weenie anyway

Here is the link to all the courses–I didn’t see that it had been posted.

It’s kind of funny to see Doug Payne, Hannah Sue, and Becky Holder in the BN horse division. But I guess they have clients that want to see their horses there.

The training horse division looks tough, with the top 11 scores all below 25. And what are the ATC divisions? They are very small.

Thanks kcmel for the link! Just looked at preliminary- no ditches or banks? I’m also counting 8 times that prelim crosses its own path- after watching the dueling Prelim riders at USPC Champs I’m curious if that’s going to play out again the same way…

Looked at training, since that’s where I’m at. All the fences look the same. Actually, three of them ARE identical -9, 10, and 15a. There doesn’t seem to be any terrain, and lots of other fences “in the way”. No bank or drop except into the water.
Just lots of big square fences, one wedge, and a ditch. I was skeptical but this is pretty bad, actually.

Wow. Novice, same deal, literally the same, except no drop into water, and a sort of faux corner right before the end.
They just look like slightly shrunken versions of training.

Those are horrible excuses for XC courses.

I hope they ride fabulously for all the people involved but goodness gracious - a jumper derby is more exciting than that! No coffins?! How can that even be at a championship. Farce.

I am guessing (and please correct me if I am wrong) that the XC course will expand considerably with time, and may include much more property and terrain.

So, I am going to wait and see how it develops over the next few years. Given the resources available, Tryon has the potential to be a terrific eventing venue.

So many new events start with only a portion of the eventual property simply because of how much labor is involved.

I hope it expands real soon as The Fork moved there for the spring. It will be tough to turn what we are seeing today into a 3*.

I doubt they have any intention of turning it into a real 3*. It will be another “eventing showcase” but they’ll call it a 3*. All these ULR’s would sell their own child for the promise of some prize money and should all be ashamed of themselves for participating in this farce. It’s a travesty that we’ve lost a real event to this nonsense. I really hope the Fork organizers actually wanted to get out of eventing and weren’t gently (or not so gently) shoved aside to clear the way for Tryon.

It’s hard to get an idea of the distance between fences at BN and Novice. Are those as close together as they seem? Some of those don’t look to be more than 10 strides apart in the early part of the course.

I wonder if the un-natural-ness will be an issue at all. That water complex on the advanced course–it looks like there’s nowhere to go, nowhere to land without running smack into a wall at the base of the spectator stand. I’d have a hard time believing I could have much speed there. I do hope the perspective is better from horseback. Will see–going to try to go down to watch on Saturday!

It may be lovely in the future but doesn’t seem to be ready for the AECs.
Who is this jump/course designer? The jumps are horrid. Small flower plots that are laid out far infront of jumps hardly make a flat faced box less vertical…
They only throw off a horses judgement.

I feel sorry for the horses. I hope there are not as many issues as I would predict. Horses don’t understand that crap. Its unfair to their wee brains.
The first Training level fences hardly invite a happy flow… and then right to a drop into water at #7.
Idk. Who approved this?

Mark Phillips is the course designer.

When you look at the maps pf the grounds there is not a lot of room to expand as most of the land is designated for houses.

Soft cheese saves lives, CMP.
jus sayin’.
Feels like we’re just went back in time.

I still have the pic from Lamplight with the stuffed mouse stapled to the box.

Wow, that’s a bit over the top.

The vitriol on these boards is unreal sometimes. :frowning:
