"Affordable" Breeches during weight loss?

I knowwwww I know, there’s a millions threads on this topic but I’m looking for some breeches to serve a specific purpose.

I am in the midst of a weight loss journey (down 50lbs so far!), and all my breeches (RJs 32s) are falling off my hips. I would love to just stick with RJs but it’s really not economical, especially as I’m continuing to lose weight. I’m hoping to find some different brand/style options to bridge the gap between where I’m at now, and my goal weight/size.

Does the hive mind have any suggestions for more affordable breech options that fit similarly to RJs? I like the Annas best, but the Gulf and Gracie cuts fit me well too. I’d estimate being between a 28-30 currently, if that matters.

Appreciate everyone’s insight!

Congrats on your progress so far!
How do you feel about used/eBay? I did a quick search for RJ breeches and saw several in the $50-range. Since you expect this size to be a temporary stop on your journey, might be worth rolling the dice on used. eBay does have good buyer protections if someone misrepresents a product that winds up at your door.
Personally I’d have more confidence in a used good quality item than some fly by night brand off Amazon.

I keep an eye out on the SmartPak website for sales if I want to pick up something cheap

ETA I picked up some tights to wear during pregnancy:

These are super cute, and lean more toward compression than really stretchy. I continue to wear them post partum. https://espritequestrian.com/collections/new-classic-tights

All of these are SUPER comfy and stretchy. I wore them while pregnant just to sit at home or run to town to do chores and to ride. They are cotton and probably aren’t super durable, but lasted for the few months (at 1-2 uses a week per pair) that I needed them for.

Are you looking for show breeches or schooling?
Big fan of the Free Ride yoga tights. Cheaper and super comfortable. Great for schooling.

For showing, I’m partial to FITS or Samshield. Not super economical, but tons of stretch so can span in between sizes. As some others have mentioned, Ebay/Poshmark/consignment is your best bet while you adjust to your goal weight. Set yourself a reward of buying a new pair of “26 or 28’s” once you’ve completed your mission and have secured your size needed at your new weight plateau.

Thanks for this, I always forget about ebay! Totally cool with going used, definitely feel more confident buying used with a brand/style I already know the fit of so I don’t have to worry about returning. Good call.

I would take a look at Tried Equestrian then in addition to Ebay: https://www.triedequestrian.com/collections/womens-breeches

Looks like the RJ selection right now isn’t particularly great, but as will all things consignment that constantly changes. I personally school in Free Ride “breeches” and highly recommend - with the stretch they’re very useful for accommodating weight transitions.

Second Free Ride, and you can find them used on facebook too. Plus they always tend to have some deal or discount code.

Look in the Facebook groups like English Riding Apparel and English Tack Trader, too - lots to be found there, just use the PayPal or Venmo Goods and Services option for payment so that you get buyer protection.

I have great luck with Poshmark. I basically trade in and out Tailored Sportsman‘s every time I lose or gain.

I second poshmark… Lots of good deals there

Thanks everyone! I never would have thought to check out Poshmark for riding clothes. What a “hidden” gem!

Highly recommend checking out https://www.thegreytail.org/. I ordered about $200 worth of Kastel shirts from them and they were delightful to work with. The website takes a bit to wade through and you email them the items you want, but there are amazing deals to be had and it was super easy to order with quick shipping.

OP, I live near Teskey’s (large western tack store with a small English section) and they have a sale rack of RJs & some others. I think there was a 30R that was green(?) with leather knee patch for $30 the other day! I’m happy to go look for you and purchase/ship if they are your preferred style.

As for other brands, I am currently expermienting with this because I’ve taking Dressage lessons one x per week, and I of course sold all my hunter things, except my boots, when I switched to western. I refuse to buy expensive stuff for occasional lessons while I’m getting back in shape.

So, I experimented and found these on amazon. 10/10 recommend! I got the large & feel like they fit true. They are very comfy, lighter weight but a nice material, and they were everything I wanted in a schooling breech.

That’s so generous of you!! For $30 on RJs I would absolutely take a chance on those, but don’t make a special trip for me or anything!

Those Amazon ones look promising too. I like the look of the mesh on the sock bottoms. Have to keep an eye out for when the knee patch comes back in stock in my size!

Poshmark and facebook groups are my go-to. On Poshmark, I find most offerings have barely been used, if at all.

I’ve pretty much given up buying any clothing retail. It’s my contribution towards saving stuff from the landfill. And I find some nice, unusual stuff for affordable prices.

Congratulations on your weight loss!

While I was losing weight, I bought cheap second hand breeches off of eBay. I figured that since I wasn’t going to fit in them for long, this was my best route. I ended up with several pairs of lightly used (some even still new with tags, just old stock) Miller’s breeches I was pretty happy with, and a few other brands (Colt Cromwell, TuffRider). I love Kerrits breeches, too.
