after eye removal my mare still cuts/sorts cows like a pro!

My mare had to have her eye removed last Feb due to a cancer tumor… that got very bad. I was so worried she would not be able to sort the cows like she had before. She’s a great cowhorse. I was so happy to find out, she is just as good as ever, it does not bother her at all even on the blind side.

I was also amazed how well she knows where things are on her blind side… like when opening/closing gates while am mounted. She never has an issue.

So amazing how well they adapt.

That’s great.

Excellent ! Be Proud !

Thrilled for both of you ~

Glad to hear. My late great tb lost an eye at age 8, it did take him about a year to adjust completely, high goofiness factor even with two eyes. But he did continue to foxhunt for years, and we raced him over timber one season as well.

That doesn’t surprise me. At my barn there is a horse that has both eyes removed and she is turned out everyday and ridden. Another just had 1 eye removed and he is turned out and ridden as usual.

Good for her!

I have known some one eyed jumpers, ropers and school horses and they didn’t have any problems with being one eyed.

There are not many such out there, nice to know your mare is still doing fine like that.

Thanks everyone, she adjusted very quickly. She is just a bit more wary at night… and sometimes she forgets and will bump her blind side on something… but not for long… she doesn’t do it that often. I am amazed how she sorted last weekend… its like she can still see … she’s so intuitive with cows.
