AFTER Nexium....?

After a course of ulcer meds, or generally as a preventative, what is your choice? I know and have all the horse husbandry bits covered - 24-7 pasture, supplemental hay, hay cubes soaked every meal, low grain intake… but one guy is a typical Lusitano seeing everything and is finishing up a Nexium course, and the other is in really hard (FEI-level) work (and used to eat fences)…
It seems all I see as a supplement focuses on hind gut health… is there a GOOD gastric supplement?
Currently one gets Equisure from KER and Gastroease from Perfect Products. I thought the Equisure was gastric but now I read that they both are hind gut (altho differently acting) supplements. I will say that since Bravo has been on them the fence eating has stopped.

TIA

Purina Outlast is a great product if you can get it in them at least 3 times per day.

I think I read on one of these threads that the main ingredient in Succeed is whole grain oat bran. It’s much less $$ than Succeed and you can feed 1/4C twice daily to coat the gut. Can’t remember if it was specific to fore or hind gut as a maintenance supp.

I feed Outlast and also Papaya Puree

None of this is personal experience, but I have heard that if your horse is not IR then Succeed, or the cheaper straight oat bran, is very good. If your horse is IR, as I understand it oat bran is not the best option. Dr. Kellon’s recommends OTC calcium or calcium plus magnesium antacids, aloe vera juice or U Gard for those horses.

thanks everyone. . They get Purina Strategy which includes Outlast, but I never thought of adding it… I might just get a bag to top dress (since they get such little quantity of grain.). And Succeed /Oat Bran is a hind gut product.

Outlast is a great product if you are feeding enough/on a reasonable schedule to accommodate it. I’m giving one of mine Gut-X now, and I’ve also fed GastroEase in the past.

I have mine on Outlast, plus I was feeding U-Guard and a probiotic; however after 2 rounds of Sucralfate and trying him off it; vet and I decided to just keep him on as it was the only thing that was working.

I’m also feeding Gut X and seeing good results but we are also weaning off the nexium so who’s to say. I highly suspected hindgut ulcers with her too and her symptoms are less and less each week and the nexium wouldn’t make an impact on highgut so I do think it is working. I also feed outlast before we do anything to buffer while we ride, or trailer, or any activity that could be stressful.
