ah mice! anyone have a spare cat?

It’s fall again so the mice are back in my barn

I really want to control them better this winter last winter I just sort of ignored them and it was so gross. My “barn” is really just a modular run in shed, stall, and tack/feed room and they love to hang out there.

I don’t want to put out poison because I’m afraid my dog or the horses will eat it (or the dead mouse after it has eaten it). I’m sort of a wuss about the traps, I don’t want to see that… it grosses me out. My mom suggested I put a mouse trap in a brown paper bag but then how do I know when the trap has gone off??

What’s the best way to control the kritters??

Lowe’s has snap traps that have a black hood over them so you don’t have to look at the mouse. Use peanut butter as bait.

I had a mouse in my kitchen and caught it quickly using a variation of this humane trap. I used a ruler instead of a toilet paper tube. Just make sure the waste basket is tall enough so the critter can’t get out.

Of course, if you don’t want to bother releasing it well away from your barn, you may be better off getting a cat.

Too bad you’re so far, I should rent out one of our barn cats (he’s the only real good mouser). I did not think I had a mouse/rodent problem until we got Leo. heck the cat catches frogs too, for fun!

just find an orange and white male kitty. I’m on my second one - trust me, no mice problems! I swear there is something about that colour. We call him our “Rodent Control Officer”.

There are several brands of traps that you don’t have to see the mouse.

These are my favorites:

I’m so weird about traps… I have no issue with a cat catching and killing a mouse, but for me to put out a trap and kill it… I just feel guilty! I’m by no means a PETA person or anything like that, they’re just so cute and mousey I feel badly!

But they look like RODENTS!! They are NOT any of the animated, cartoon kind of mice.

Mice pee on and wreck EVERYTHING they touch! And then they MULTIPLY, so things get even worse. They make me very angry, spreading nastiness, possible diesease carriers, running everywhere. I sure don’t want my horses getting sick from some ucky thing the mice carried into their stalls while grabbing spilled grain or peeing in the hay. So I actually have gotten over being sqeamish about getting rid of mice and varmints by any means possible. Traps work.

I would loan you a REALLY nice cat, very good hunter, but I would want her back. Our five cats work at mice catching as their chief entertainment in the barn. Worth keeping the cats nuetered, vaccinated, wormed, to have them removing vermin in the barn. While they may never catch all the varmints, I am not seeing the mice or evidence of them being around the barn either.

Meredith if you’re in Elkton OREGON I will personally deliver to you my A-No.1-Dyed-in-the-Wool-Ace-Hunting-Feline. This cat single-pawedly has kept my barn completely free of all forms of vermin; he then took to the fields and graduated to gophers and moles. He leaves the birds alone. He leaves the wild bunnies alone.

First cat I’ve ever had that I cannot stand.

Oh - he’s gorgeous, well-mannered (purrs for cat food), learned to avoid getting burrs and foxtails in his lovely long orange coat, is neutered, does not roam, does not fight, can be carried up/down/sideways, loves to be brushed, stretches luxuriously displaying a flawlessly groomed belly and doesn’t even grapple your bare hand with his meat hooks when you succumb to the temptation to pet that silky fur.

He has this really unfortunate habit though. I mean, besides torturing his kill at length before dispatching - far, far more and far more cruelly than any cat I’ve ever seen before. What he does is, when the rodentia is finally defunct, he eats the head only and leaves the torso. Except he also unzips the underside of the torso to spill out the contents which generally are left right there alongside the corpse. Right outside the feedroom door.

This cat I cannot stand. Because of him, I have not been able to eat breakfast since - I can’t even remember when. I have told him how much I appreciate the enthusiasm in which he performs his career but would he kindly take the byproducts otherwhere. No such luck.

So - are you in Elkton OREGON? If so - this is your lucky day and you have yourself THE best feline hunter in the west!

good barn cats are the way to go.

but, (PSA) please get them spayed/neutered… or you will get run over with cats too. if you call your local shelters, you can find a low cost S/N clinic

I have 5, they do a GREAT job. definitely earn their keep. they are all fixed (on flea control, dewormer, and UTD… sigh) and keep any other strays out of their territory

they are awesome, worth every penny I spend on them

I think Susan P on this board is involved in barn cat rescue. I would send her a PM.

Creamsicle cat!! I have one too and he murders everything! I am not a big cat person but I love that little guy and agree that colour combo makes for a different type of beast! Mine looks just like this guy:

So cute! That one needs a home…he is in New York. Someone go get him.

My Dobe has become a pretty good mouser too.

Erin always has cats too. And she is in Baltimore.

I have two of hers. One lives in our house and is middle daughter’s pride and joy.

And Brewski rules our barn with an iron paw. No mice allowed and all dogs must behave.

I’d definitely send Erin a PM - those Baltimore cats are terrific characters.

I could lend you my dog. My brilliant neighbours decided to put their pile of wood right next to the fence closest to MY house. Then, they decided that the birds would be hungry, so they put a bird feeder right over it. Lumber + spilled bird seed? There’s mice all over that side of the yard and hiding under the deck. Luckily, my dog is a “hunting dawg” or so he thinks, so he’s been out there every day catching and killing mice. His count is up to 10 today and he nabbed a squirrel, too.

The funniest thing? He’s not a JRT or a daschund or any other little bred-for-hunting-rodents dog. He’s a flat coat retriever.

I had been in touch with Erin (I believe it was her.) this time last year when the mice got bad. She had even given me a list of adoptable cats, but then I never heard back from her
