Aidan O'Brien has sired a Derby winner! (233rd running of the Derby G1)

The smallest field in over 100 years will go to post tomorrow at Epsom, with only nine runners lined up to race.

Camelot, winner of the 2000 Guineas in his last start, is odds on fave (4/6) to add the second leg of the English Triple Crown and set up the unique prospect of possible Triple Crown winners on both sides of the Atlantic this year. He will be ridden by 19 year old Joesph O’Brien, son of trainer Aidan. The kid has come a long way since winning a silver medal at the European Pony Eventing championships just three years ago.

In an interesting side not, Hayley Turner will become only the 2nd female jockey to ever ride in the Derby when she gets the leg up on longshot Cavaliero.

The two O’Brien trained horses are Coolmore horses.

Mickdamm is a Maktoum horse of sorts, he runs in the colours of one of the lesser known Maktoums, Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, a cousin of Sheikh Mo (Darley) and Sheikh Hamdan (Shadwell).
There is no Godolphin runner this year, they have been conspicuously low key, or even absent, from most of the classic races so far this year.

Was defintely a 3-hanky race for Mom O’Brien - she was crying when she noted that last week Lester Piggot apparently told Joseph to wait, and wait he did.

You would have to like his chances of winning the third leg of the Triple Crown, the St Leger. Distance shouldn’t be a problem for this guy.

Opps, that was the wrong replay, that was the Coronation Cup won by BC Turf winner St Nicholas Abbey… yes, that was a convincing win, and the front runner you mention, Robin Hood, was the pacemaker for St Nicholas Abbey, his job was to run fast early, hence him folding later on.

There were those naysayers who said O’Brien’s son was, due to his height, done with flat racing - yet he wins again with St. Nicolas Abbey and now with Camelot! Outstanding!!

Alas I had to watch the race on my DRV and watched the evening news (NBC) where when they revealed the winner during their piece on The Queen. Come on folks - spoiler alter, please

There are no Coolmore silks per se. The purple with white strips you saw on Camelot are Derrick Smith’s silks. The blue and orange are Michael Tabor silks. The all navy blue are Sue Magnier’s silks (she also an alternate all pink set that you only ever see in Ireland).
I’m not sure how they decide who wears what. Like if they draw lots, or if they sit down at the start of each year and divy up the 2yos. Would be interesting to know.

Here’s an interesting factoid, this is the first time that Derrick Smith’s silks have won the Derby (Sue Magnier’s silks were worn by Pour Moi last year), but his silks have been 2nd the last 4 years in a row, and 5 out of the last 6!!!

Thanks. I really don’t think we’ve seen a more successful partnership in horse racing based upon the relatively small stable size of the three partners yet having this nack for having a competitive runner- if not the winner - on the biggest days.

The Queen’s height is 5’ 4" and Joseph O’Brien is 6’ tall … for comparison Lester Piggott, when he won the Epsom Derby in 1954 on Robert Sterling Clark’s Never Say Die, was 5’8".

As an aside the winner of the 1880 Epsom Derby, it now turns out with advances in science, a switched horse running under another’s name … the Tadcaster won

In the Epsom Derby of June 1880, a horse named Bend Or crossed the finishing line just ahead of his rival, Robert the Devil.

Celebrations turned sour when the owners of Robert the Devil claimed that Bend Or was running under the wrong name and was in fact a horse called Tadcaster. They argued that the two had been confused as yearlings – and that Robert the Devil was therefore the bona fide winner.

Bend Or and Tadcaster came from the Duke of Westminster’s Eaton Stud in Cheshire. With the same sire but out of two different dams, the three-year-olds looked strikingly similar – though the dam of the horse running in the Derby as Bend Or came from a lineage that had never won a race and the dam of the horse known as Tadcaster came from a winning line.

At a stewards’ inquiry the owners of the two horses, who had long been arch enemies, argued their cases. The inquiry found for the owners of Bend Or who went on to stand at stud and, on the basis of his Derby win, made the Duke of Westminster a small fortune.

Samples of DNA taken from the skeleton of Bend Or, which is archived in the Natural History Museum, were shown to match that of the living relatives of Tadcaster, proving almost without doubt that the horse running under the name Bend Or in the Derby of 1880 was indeed Tadcaster.

Joseph O’Brien had his first runners today as a licensed trainer… 3 winners.
I guess Dad will need to keep a look over his shoulder.
His very first runner, Justice Freedom, was a winner and was ridden by his younger brother, 17 year old Donnacha. The runner up was trained by Aidan.
