Aiken communities

I am thinking of taking a long weekend to do an initial checking-out of equestrian communities in the Aiken area (other trips will be planned to Tryon and to the Rockbridge County area of Virginia).

I know the risks of HOAs.

Any recommendations for communities to check out? I’m looking for excellent trails (miles and miles; we don’t do endurance but I do want a lot more than a mundane loop around the perimeter of the community), a community ring (that allows outside trainers) and possibly a community stable, and the ability to keep horses on our property. Also want a friendly community that has maybe a pool and clubhouse/other ways to meet the neighbors, find other people to ride with, etc.

Thank you!

The ones that come to mind here in Aiken to check out would be Three Runs Plantation, Hopeland Farms, Bridle Creek, Tod’s Hill, Fox hollow and Barrington Farms. Most all of those places have all (if not almost all) on your checklist.

My friend (lower level dressage rider but also has a Foxtrotter for trail riding) bought property and then built her own house and barn/pasture/arena in a horsey development near Aiken. I believe the town is called New Ellen. Lots of meandering trails and trees. I know she’s linked up with other trail riders, too. She loves it. It does have an HOA, but knowing my friend it can’t be too invasive or controlling or she wouldn’t have moved there.
