Air Conditioning Small Tack Room?

I have a very small tack Room with small windows. I need to air conditioner it to keep my tack from holding. Has anyone used one of those portable floor models? Lowe’s has 1 for a $169. What do you all do to keep your tack from molding in this weather a? A DE humidifier will make it too hot.

Do you have an outside wall that could be cut out for a small window unit a/c? Would be much more efficient.

What do the reviews say about the floor model you’re looking at?

I have installed in my tack and feed room a small AC unit. We cut holes in the wall for the install and they work like a charm in these hot Texas summers. Great for keeping the room cool and dehumidifying.

Thanks. But there will be no hole cutting. My husband with certainly not go for it to. The tack Room is very small maybe 10’ by 15’ at the most

I have a “portable” A/C for my leather shop as it’s outside the normal heating/cooling system in the house (a converted, enclosed porch). I turn it on when I’m out there but it doesn’t run all the time. It does the job but the better, more efficient option would be a small window unit. Maybe later this year.

But even then it won’t run all the time. In small tack room if you can’t do an A/C you can do a dehumidifier. It’s not as good but it’s better than nothing.

I put a window unit in my insulated tack room a while back. My room is bigger than yours but it cost me about $100 a month to run the unit. I decided to just bring my good stuff into the house so it wouldn’t mildew.

the portable floor models we used needed to drain the water it pulls from the air, unless what you are looking at one that has a holding tank.

We had a portable unit in our RV when we lived in it while building in Tx. Ours was close to $500 though!! It DID work well…just loaned it to a neighbor last night to get them through until their AC man could show up! Well worth a shot and no holes…it does have to vent outdoors, but has an adapter that fits in a window.

My tack room is also small - 12x12. I put in an inverter. It works beautifully.

Lucassb,
What is an inverter? My tac Room is probably the same size as yours although different dimensions. DE humidifiers make the Room hot and I only have 10 and a 1/2 inches height in the window and no one makes an air conditioner for a window small enough. Do you have a picture or a link to an inverter? Thanks

I just bought this little dehumidifer on Amazon. It doesn’t really put out any heat and is doing a great job keeping the humidity down in my tack room, which is the same size as yours. I bought it because it was super cheap but has great reviews and is good for small spaces.

If you do want an AC unit, try a portable unit. You run the vent hose out the window.

Enjoytheride! I bought the same unit (maybe I saw a previous post on COTH?) Mine works great too in my windowless 10x10 tack room. I also keep a fan on in there 24/7 —better than it used to be --not perfect, but does keep the mildew at bay most of the summer. I also put small cans of EVER DRY into sealed plastic bins where I keep winter blankets and gear —keeps those smelling great --but remember to take out before you move the bins and water gathers in the bottom of the canister as the crystals pull moisture out of the air.)

An inverter offers both heat and air conditioning in a small, wall mounted unit. They are also sometimes called, “mini splits.” Mine is installed up on the wall so it’s out of the way and we operate it with a little remote; it’s very convenient and uses very little energy. Here is an example: https://www.amazon.com/WYS012-17-Air-Conditioner-Inverter-Ductless/dp/B01DVW6G06

Something like this is what we have, a Mitsubishi one.
The outside unit serves all rooms, tack/lounge, bath and feed room.
The heat and air company that put the house heat pump are the ones that recommended that system.
Works great, doesn’t use hardly any electricity and we don’t have to run it much.

Didn’t realize they had some that small, good idea.

Yep, my unit is pretty compact, but it gets the job done and we love it. Keeps the tack room comfortable all year round and I didn’t have to sacrifice my (one) window to do it!

Yikes! Those suckers are expensive!

After much debate (with myself) I settled on a dehumidifier instead of AC – reason being my tack was going to get moldy in cooler humid weather too in the spring/fall and summer – not just during those super hot and humid mid-summer days.

Given that, I figured an AC would make the room too cold on those cooler days whereas a dehumidifier wouldn’t = a trade off for the potential heat the dehumidifier might give off.

Turns out the dehumidifier did NOT make my tackroom substantially warmer at all on those very hot days – temperature was fine; increase negligible and no moldy tack.
