Author is Kate Lattey. Her accounts of shows and everyday life here in New Zealand are very accurate. =)

The Foreward
Foreword
Don Höglund, MS, DVM
Author of Nobody’s Horses
The Wild Horse Dilemma has better chronicled the life and times of the contemporary free-roaming horse than any previous resource. This study examines the various Atlantic free-roaming horse populations and echoes the observation that “live and let live” no longer applies to the environment—we affect everything, including our oceans. Human population growth, urban sprawl, and natural resource development have caused us to rethink how humans interact with the other elements of life in time and space, and these influences are further complicated by the presence of human emotion.
From my perspective, and building from the wonderful work of Dr. Dan Simons at the University of Illinois’ Vic-Cog Laboratory, prominent free-roaming horse issues meld into a potpourri of illusion and emotion. Humans tend to believe that they are capable of accurately seeing what is right in front of them and of precisely remembering what they have seen and heard. They believe they can clearly determine the cause and effect of “wild” horse management plans. A concerned public often listens to expert authority. They believe the words of confident-sounding “wild-horse experts.” As caring citizens, many believe that being merely familiar with free-roaming horse issues is the same as being knowledgeable. But familiarity with the horse quandary does not equal factual knowledge.
The Wild Horse Dilemma helps the reader to gain objective knowledge of the free-roaming horse predicament and to challenge every statistic and claim made by any side of the free-roaming horse debate. The illusion of awareness creates a misperception that all free-roaming horses are subject to the same laws. There are private populations of free-roaming horses owned by independent people or living on military installations, there are horses on public and private lands and there are horses gone-loose. Some of them are somebody’s horses, some are nobody’s horses, and some are everybody’s horses. Any discussion about horses should begin with determining what population is being discussed, who is legally responsible for the horses and what issues are at hand.
Keep in mind two things as you read the enlightening prose between these covers. Confident sounding people are not necessarily accurate, but we tend to believe them, even though as Dan Simons’ work has shown, experts are documented to be incorrect at least thirty percent of the time. For example, the fact that some horses were herded for many miles does not necessarily mean physical exhaustion caused any subsequent spontaneous abortions. Take into consideration the close proximity to human presence and being handled immediately after capture. Realize that contact with humans is unfamiliar to most free-roaming horses and it is a stressor. Just climb into an elevator and sense the distress among the occupants competing for space. Then, imagine releasing a harmless snake and imagine the resulting distress. Corralling wild horses yields similar distress.
We must ponder all relevant factors when considering the horses’ welfare. No discussion of horse issues would be complete without a treatment of the emotions evoked by the thought of wild horses. This informative book addresses the emotional issues clearly, and readers should be cautious not to be overwhelmed by them. That humans are capable of introspective awareness is obvious. At the same time, keep in mind, as Dr. Joseph LeDoux at NYU Center for Neural Sciences educates, “Thinking will not control emotion.” To make matters more complicated, emotion—like stress—is not well defined, and if it is not clearly explained it is difficult to understand and study. One thing is for sure, however: we will never know what animals are thinking, feeling, or wanting. What we can do is focus on what the horses are doing. We can certainly protect their welfare, measure their wellbeing, and manage them within the principles of humane handling. It seems to me that we should fund, study and manage free-roaming horses where they roam.
Many people have dedicated their lives and resources to the plight of the free- roaming horse. In The Wild Horse Dilemma, Bonnie Gruenberg has encircled the breadth of free-roaming horse difficulties. This work is a chronicle of human and horse history wrapped around the emotions of humans and the mystery of why horses have captured human interest.

I’m celebrating the publication of the most recent novel in my eventing fiction series Crawling Between Heaven and Earth:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077YQNSHZ
From today, December 10th to December 17th, I’m putting books 1-3 on sale in the Kindle store, both US and UK versions for $.99 and £ .99, so readers can catch up with Simon if they’ve missed one of his adventures. And also if someone needs a cheap horsey fiction fix to get through the stress of the holiday season! I’ll put down the US links to avoid, er, confusion but if anyone has trouble finding the link in the UK store, just let me know.
Book 1: Fortune’s Fool

Book 2: Quick Bright Things Come to Confusion
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01J619F8G
Book 3: Stars Hide Your Fires
Crawling Between Heaven & Earth is also free right now if you have Kindle Unlimited. I just finished it and it’s fabulous!
Thank you so much @GreyDes!
All of my books in the Fortune’s Fool series are part of Kindle Unlimited, so if you’re a subscriber, they are all free, all year 'round!
I LOVE the new Fortune’s Fool book, and am following you on Amazon. I hope that you continue to take us on Simon’s adventures for years to come. I would have finished reading this last night, but it was 2 a.m., and I was starting to get fuzzy. The last time I pushed through to finish a book when in this state, I arrived at the end and realized that I had no comprehension of what had occurred in the last quarter of the book!
As a former endurance rider, who moved to eventing (no, not at the advanced levels!), I have a little more connection to what he’s going through, and can’t wait to finish the book.
This is a wonderful series, and well worth buying! I could read these on Kindle Unlimited, but I just go ahead and buy them. They’re that good! Thank you, Impractical, for great reading! Maybe Simon could go ahead and do the Tevis Cup?
@Pat9 I am truly honored that someone who is a former endurance rider is enjoying the book! The Mongol Derby is certainly crazy although the Tevis has its own unique level of insanity as well (and unlike the Derby, the rider has the responsibility of conditioning the horse beforehand, as well as riding). And thank you so much for buying even though they are available through Kindle Unlimited. It all goes back into further research for the next one!
I’m only 17,144 words into the first draft of the fifth book. This one seems to be taking a bit of a different turn into a more US-specific equestrian sport (although I’m definitely not ruling out returning to endurance racing in the far future). And I think Phillip, Simon’s SO, will figure more prominently in book five as well, as is only natural as their relationship develops!
Well, there’s always team penning, Impractical!
@Pat9 Actually, in the prequel to my series, The Horse Is Never Wrong, Simon did have a bit of disastrous venture into team penning as a very young teen with an excitable OTTB! I think his distaste for country music and the fact his brother used to ride Western has prejudiced him for life, unfortunately. No, right now I’m thinking that his next adventure may take him into the world of racing…but with a twist. (Again, this is still very much in the planning stages).
In honor of the upcoming R…I mean, Kentucky Three-Day, Stars Hide Your Fires, Book 3 of my Fortune’s Fool eventing series is now on sale for .99 in the US and UK Kindle stores.

UK link:

Of all my books in the series, it’s the one that deals most directly with the lows as well as the highs of the sport, including a tragedy which will change the course of the protagonist’s life forever. But still a fun read and ultimately a celebration of the sport!
In the last 2 days I’ve read all 4 Fortune’s Fool books. Binge-reading at it’s finest.

Elizabeth Letts’ book The Perfect Horse, about the rescue of the Lippizans is on sale on Kindle for $1.99 right now.

StGermain, I have read several of your books, but I found the discussions/details of gay sex definitely TMI. Do you have any books that are PG rated?
