** ALERT! -- Free Horse-Related Kindle Book -- ALERT! **

@McGurk I love Michael York (and he was absolutely wonderful and vulnerable in Cabaret, what a great film). I wonder what he looked like when he was seventeen or so? And although Anthony Hopkins is best remembered for Hannibal Lector, I also remember his subtle, sensitive performances in Remains of the Day and Howard’s End.

International Velvet was a rather uneven film, but Hopkins’ performance as the team coach was the best thing in it.

I could see Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars) as Phillip. He’s getting a little bit old, but Phillip doesn’t show up until Simon is older, so…

I think horse films are very expensive to make, unfortunately, animals being animals, and other than racing stories, don’t tend to do that well at the box office. Still, an author can dream…

Hello all! Just a little bump to this thread to announce that I’m offering Stars Hide Your Fires (Fortune’s Fool, #3) for sale for .99 in the Kindle Store until 3/8. I consider this the first book of Simon’s more mature existence, and the book in which people get to know the characters that will feature most prominently in books 4, 5, and (hopefully) future book 6.

Not horse-related (although it does have a special guest animal star in the form of a dachshund named Wentworth), my Austen-inspired YA book is free until 3/8 in the Kindle store, for an exclusive one-time offer.

In my opinion, this is the best horse story every written. And it is 99 cents.

I agree. I have loved this story since I first read it as a child. (In a Margaret Caball Self anthology, IIRC.)

lizthenag,

I agree. I absolutely loved that story. And thought that some day, I would like to offer a horse a drink from their trophy.

Loved the format for book 5!

Book 6–which should be coming out by the end of October at the very latest (hopefully earlier) has a similar dual perspective format. But Simon’s voice is alternated with…a different character’s…

Oh! Now it is a game for me to guess that second character…

I cannot believe I have never read that story! How did I not?

Anyway must name a horse Kittiwynk.

My husband once had a chance to excercise polo ponies. He said it took a bit to get used to them always running into each other!

Although when I was an intern I did health papers on plenty of them I have never actually been to a polo match.

Ha! I will have to leave you all in suspense! I admit, I’m very impressed by any author who can pull off an animal’s voice (especially in a book aimed at an older audience), but I was not that bold in this one. Bold, but not that bold.

@Impractical Horsewoman, just finished Courage to the Sticking Place and loved it.

My very favorite part was early on, when Simon describes the hunters as “…an elaborate game of Three Card Monte. The point is to move horses from one owner to the next. Hunter trainers search for a sweet spot of a horse who will need lots of training rides but a kid can still win on.”

I also like the as ever realistic depiction of professional horsepeople’s lives; and the character development, both for Simon and the second narrator.

I’m so glad you enjoyed it–and the second narrator wink, wink who does not come from the world of eventing!

I use a mix of fictional and real references in the books, and I admit I love the cleverness of the name Higher Standards for a horse-related product.

I bought the new book last night BUT I HAVE OTHER THINGS TO DO
