Alfalfa Hay

I’ve checked with local to me feed stores…no one has alfalfa bales, only blends. I’m looking to get alfalfa for one horse and I’m able to pick it up in either my truck and/or trailer. Does anyone know of anyone local to the Winchester, VA area that has good quality and sells in the smaller amounts? I have a source in Orange, VA, but trying not to drive that far for $12 a bale if I don’t have to! Any help would be appreciated!!!

$12 a bale for alfalfa? In So Cal it’s over $20 for 3 wire!

$13.50 for 60 lb bales here in CT…for something that would be considered “mix hay” in MN!! (Geez, I miss MN hay.)

It’s a crappy time of year to buy hay. The guys with the goods can pretty much name their price. Have you considered cubes or pellets instead?

We already get tons of cubes for breakfast and dinner. Basically my guy is “special” and requires a crazy diet! He just needs really alfalfa to buffer the rest of the day because more than 2 feedings doesn’t work! He’s also VERY picky and eats breakfast at his pace throughout the day. Yes, he’s been scoped recently…today actually! He won’t eat more soaked cubes than what is currently being fed.

Do you have a TSC? IIRC, they sell compressed alfalfa bales. Probably not any cheaper, but could be more convenient!

I’ll have to check it out! None of the Southern States in the area carry the same stuff! It’s extremely annoying…

I second the suggestion of the Standlee compressed bales that TSC sells. Very convenient and usually nice quality.

The TSC stuff is convenient but gets pricey fast. I’d call around some local hay suppliers. There should be some dealers that have a variety in stock.

$33 the last bale of alfalfa I bought! [where’s the fainting icon when you need one?] About 70lbs

We buy alfalfa for $4-5 a bale (2 string, 50#) in Western PA. Road trip??

Usually the alfalfa down south comes from PA, OH, etc. That’s why it costs so much down here, you’re paying for the shipping. I don’t know that it’s worth making the trip yourself. 14-20 hours one way, plus gas?

I just moved to Florida from Ohio - in Ohio I could also get nice alfalfa small squares for $4-5. Although I expected prices to be higher, there was still some sticker shock! Just saw alfalfa bales at a store for $33, probably 70-80 lbs. I can’t.

in Odessa FL the alfalfa is $24 for a 2 string bale. I can get it cheaper at $19 a bale in Brooksville.

I wish I could get decent alfalfa for $12

17.25 in Santa Barbara for 3 wire 120lb bales

What part of PA?! I would drive to get some!!! PA is not that far from me depending which part!

I’ve heard great things about Standlee, but I mentally cannot and will not feed something like hay from a bag. I hate the compressed mess as it’s always dry. I’m almost 100% certain my horse won’t eat it either!
