This situation resolved well, so not really asking for solutions-just wanted to get feedback on how you might have dealt with it. The situation: I have a 4 acre field across the creek. A firecracker of a young cowgirl/horsetrainer lady here (small island) has used it for a year now to graze a few horses now and then. Her stable is just a mile and a half away, so super convenient. We had a good livestock lease.
Two weekends ago she brought over her old lesson horse who I love, and a cute new little mare. We were in a hot spell. Owner had fly masks on the horses, which was a first-I always like to put eyes on them when they arrive just to know what dings and scrapes might be new. Up till now Iâve trusted the ownerâs standard of care. Little mare had 1/2 dollar size bloody open sore on her midline. The flies were having a hey day. Owner told me she was going to be out of range and unavailable.
I didnât have any SWAT so put some zinc oxide on the sore daily. Also noticed the little mareâs front left looked like sheâd had rotation, super flat footed. A flag for me as my former horse died from 2 sep bad rotations, and here this horse is on grass.
Owner returns. Upset that I âtouchedâ the horse iâe. link oxide. even though sheâd asked me to keep an eye on them. I told her it is important to me that any domestic animal on my property is comfortable. Started getting snippy. "I wonât vet a horse thatâs not worth over $5000.00. She made a few other really nasty, imo cold remarks, all about getting money versus giving care.
The rest of the day I thought about it all, and realized that though this has worked for awhile, I needed to write in some new clauses in the agreement that addresses care and vet info, protocol for me to âtouchâ her horses etc. (was left with a goat when I moved in, owner hated it and basically left it do die, which it did, in my arms, over my first thanksgiving weekend here.) I could sense that horse owner would likely get defensive about this but I was ready.
Luckily, the next day horse owner texts to say she has gotten too busy and wonât be bringing horses to my field anytime soon. That she wasnât going to have time for fall mowing (part of the agreement.)
Big sigh of relief for me. I feel like I dodged having to deal with a bigger problem. Curious if anyone has any comments.
