Alleged - I love this personal account

http://runroughshod.blogspot.com/2010/10/saying-goodbye-to-arc-winner-alleged.html

A touching story about the last days of Alleged. He had a well-earned reputation as a mean SOB, but some of his people clearly had a soft spot for him. Seems he mellowed in his old age, though the writer makes it clear that one still had to pay attention around him. I found her description of how Alleged liked to just suck on the side of her hand to be particularly sweet; not something I would have dared!!

Warm and sentimental personal account of a great race horse. Thanks.

Thanks for sharing that. I was privileged to see Alleged a couple of times at Walmac. It was pretty clear when the groom brought him out to show him that they handled him very carefully, just let him walk out, stop and stand wherever he pleased, didn’t try to stand him up or move him around. What a great horse he was.

Thank you for this, though I’m still crying. I miss my horses so much.

Side note - the breeder/owner of Alleged - June McKnight died at age 98 just a couple weeks ago on… She also bred Tong (VT) a two-time Maryland Hunt Cup winner. An interesting and long link to horses over her lifetime. Godspeed

This was interesting to read. Alleged was my retired event horse’s sire. It’s neat to read about some of his history, and it was neat seeing the clip of his Arc win. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for sharing. Really interesting read. I own Alleged Charge and he looks a lot like his grandsire…very stubborn personality too, but he has softened with age. I see that one of the commentators on the blog owns a half sister to my horse, and sounds like they have similar personalities.

Mara, thanks for bringing this link to COTH. I have always had a soft spot for the cantankerous types…
