Allergic to Cats with Indoor Kitty?

Guys, I’m allergic to cats. Our feral barn kitty has had 2 litters this summer, we are trying to catch her to get her spayed currently. Her latest litter was just one very cute kitten. I really want to try and keep this one for myself in my house but I’m fairly allergic to cats.

Does anyone here live with a cat that is also allergic? Any advice?

Her two kittens from her first litter are still here…also to be caught and fixed haha but we don’t have a great set up for barn cats. There is 5 dogs on the property and they don’t seem to want to hang around in the tack room. The mom lives in the hay loft but its not practical. I don’t want them running off and being killed :frowning:

I’m not allergic, but ended up with 2 Supposed-To-Be-Barncats installed in my house.
When I lost my barncat of 10yrs to a stroke they were the replacements. 2 6mo kittens from a local shelter. FeLu tested, neutered & Free!
But a Reign of Terror by a huge raccoon had me relocating them from the large cages in the barn they’d been in for a week to my basement “temporarily”.
My Bad :grimacing:
That was 7yrs ago & Neither of the 2 is at all interested in Outside :unamused:

I hope someone here has an Answer for you & that cutie can move in.
Meanwhile, barncats are a different sort of pet.
Be glad Ma Cat & sibs are sticking around, but their longevity is not like a house pet & that just has to be accepted.
I was glad my little Verminator had her life end in the barn where at least I knew what happened.
Every time I’d watch her trot across the road to hunt, or go missing for a day it gave me sadness.
But I chose her to be a barncat & had to live with the decision.
Maybe Karma is why I have these latest 2 :confounded:

Yes we’ve been lucky that most of them we get dropped here we have been able to catch and fix and they have stuck around in the hay loft. We just put down one we had for 13 years. I really hope mom stays around because she is the first hunter we have had here and she is really quite the hunter. Anything and everything and we haven’t had a mouse or rat since she has shown up haha

Ok -this is kind of weird but —Ace (horse tranquillizer) in a tiny amount on cat’s food. It changes the saliva of the cat so that human’s no longer have an allergic reaction --sounds crazy but it worked for my daughter’s husband (well, ex husband now) well enough that they could keep her two cats in the house. Here’s a link:

Of course be prepared when you ask your vet for Ace to treat your husband’s cat allergies, you will get the question: “How are you going to get him to take it.”

I am very allergic to cats, so much the allergist refused to put cat stuff in the weekly allergy shot preparation.
How I got around was keeping cat squeaky clean, wiping cat morning and evening down with a hot damp towel, that took care of most cat proteins that we are allergic to.
Later years they made a product to wipe cats down that did the same, Allerpet, may find that works well for you:

My cat, found in a feed store warehouse at about 4 months old, that was going to “dispose of her”, as it kept assaulting customers.
I could not refuse catching her with welding gloves and taking her home.
Made an awesome cat, who would have not fallen for her, even if you could not breathe: :innocent:

oh this is a great idea. I have allergies to my horses also in the spring and fall when their coat changes, no other time. I have managed it with face wipes and wearing a mask. I think I could manage keeping my house super clean and daily kitty wiping for this cutie!

What a lucky kitty you have there

Purina ProPlan Live Clear allergy-reducing cat food. It neutralizes something in the animal’s saliva. It’s said to be very effective.

My sister brought one of her barn cats indoors after she tested FIV+. Her daughter is the allergic one and was off to college (now graduated); her husband has allergies but did not test positive to cat dander, but they wanted to play it safe there because of his asthma.

She got the Science Diet* allergen-reducing cat food, which Chewy sells. Reviews indicate it works, at least to some degree. So far so good in her house (and the daughter is home job-hunting after a summer internship).

*ETA: Oops, maybe it’s Purina! I probably got the brand confused with other food she uses. I’ll have to check.

Oh interesting, I think if I try all these things it could work. Worth a shot for sure.

I wonder if they have food in Canada, I’m off to Google. I wish we had Chewy here!

I am highly allergic to cats and have two indoor cats and here is what has helped me:

  1. Making sure that I take antihistamines everyday,
  2. Keeping them out of the bedroom when my allergies are really bad.
  3. Making sure that I keep the house super clean, I wash my bedding at least once a week, I vacuum almost daily and make sure that the place is kept wiped down.
  4. Weekly allergy shots and allergy testing. The allergy can help you learn what things you should be avoiding
