Allergies

What does everyone do for their horses allergies. My horse is constantly clearing her nose and “sneezing” and bops her head like she is getting bit on the nose, but nothing is there. This is only when she is outside of her stall and it’s not constant. She is getting teeth done Friday and nothing else seems abnormal with her, but I will also discuss with the vet.

Curious what meds people give to their horses or any thing they do to keep the horse comfortable if this is allergies. Has anyone tried AniHis H or HistALL H?

Might be headshaking syndrome?

I considered that, but it’s not consistent enough. Some days it’s only once or twice a day total only when she’s outside. Others it doesn’t even happen once at all. It’s only been like this for the last month and allergies have been horrible around my area so that’s why I’m leaning more towards allergies.

I’ll try and see what the vet thinks Friday.

I have a 3/4 TB who has a variety of allergies. He always sneezed a lot during spring and fall, but it advanced to what I would describe as mild headshaking, which irritated him and made it difficult to ride him. Spirulina virtually eliminates all of his symptoms.

I used AniHist years ago before they changed it to needing a prescription, and then changed the formula to be ‘all natural’. It worked great but I have little faith in their new formula, which is basically just vitamin D and ginger root.
I now use Benadryl for my horses who have allergies. This time of year is particularly hard on two of my herd. 10-12 pills crushed, once a day. You could do twice a day for very very bad allergies but I haven’t needed to.
The only problem is that at competition you cannot administer for 24h before.

My guy just has his first bout with allergies this spring too. Coughing mostly but had runny eyes and nose. We did a round of SMZs, hydroxyzine, and some Ventipulmin (for the cough) and hess all better. Also got his tear ducts flushed out for the allergies. Good luck!

Thank you! She is semi-retired and doesn’t show anymore so that luckily won’t be an issue! What is the cost perspective compared to finding a supplement or buying something prescription off the vet? Super glad you told me the all natural doesn’t work, I questioned that when I read it the other day. Not that natural means it doesn’t work - I just always read ingredients.

Super cheap. I buy a bottle of 600 count Benadryl on amazon for about 10 bucks and that lasts me two months. way cheaper than any supplement or prescription.
I would try the Benadryl and if you don’t see improvement, talk to your vet about something even stronger. The great thing about Benadryl is that it is really safe, unlike dex and some of the other steroids that can cause laminitis.

I’ve seen generic Zyrtec used as well, fairly inexpensive and seemed very effective.

Since the horse is retired, you may not want to go through this, but I had my horse allergy tested at a university vet clinic (not a blood test—the dermal test is considered the gold standard). They use the results to make a custom “serum” for your horse. Then you give them allergy shots (on a schedule the vet provides) starting out with more frequent doses of small amounts, highly diluted. You move toward less frequent, higher concentration serum. You do have to try it for at least a year to know if it’s working or not. However, outside of the initial testing, the shots aren’t that expensive–and very easy to give (tiny amount, subcutaneously). For a while I was getting the Platinum allergy supplement an it was considerably more $$$ than the shots. And the shots really helped my mare! She is sooo much more comfortable in the spring/summer. Her eyes used to get swollen and itchy and she was constantly rubbing her eye on my arm (and looking miserable!) Last summer—her eyes were clear and not itchy. I had tried some antihistamines for her before I went to the shots—but they never worked very well.

I also do the shots. Has made a world of difference to my itchy horse.

On my vet’s recommendation I use Zyrtec all summer. 10 pills twice a day. My guy gets a skin reaction to something in the soil and also gets the sneezes. Works well for hives. For the upper respiratory stuff I also feed Yoder’s Horse Powder, which is an herbal something or other targeted for horses with heaves.

Thanks everyone!! Vet said to do generic Zyrtec. 10 pills 2x a day then back off to just once a day. Going to try that and then go from there!
