Aww RIP Alfie! He was fun to watch, although I was devastated when he beat Cigar!!
RIP Alphabet Soup.
I hope his friend George makes it thru his loss ok.
Alphabet Soup and George were so bonded that the donkey will grieve for a long time. “He’s driving me crazy,” Blowen said, sounding mournful. “He keeps me up at night braying since Alphabet Soup died.”
Typically amusing yet eloquent writing, from the New Yorker:
“In 2015, he hung up his stud spurs and moved into assisted living at Old Friends Farm, a facility for racehorses emeriti in Georgetown, Kentucky.”
Priceless! @swmorse, thank you for posting.
What a great write up.
I had a broodmare I wanted to breed to Alphabet Soup, but he was pensioned around the time I was going to send her to him. She also had a beloved donkey. She had to be euthanized last month at the age of 28; I’d like to think she and Alphabet Soup are in a pasture of donkeys in the sky!
My donkey is also still grieving. She doesn’t quite know what to do with herself after spending the last 9 years as an emotional support donkey.
Anyway, that’s my long winded way of saying the article struck a chord with me.
I thought “a farm for racehorses emeriti” was great as well.
Doesn’t she? I saw one of his photos going around and couldn’t believe the head is so similar.
