Already established capped hock

so mare did this rather young probably 3 or so I stressed and tried all things to minimize it that I could that vet would suggest. I think it helped but now years later, Im noticing it enlarging. I know all things can have updates/new therapies and meds. so I thought to ask: anything newly sugested for established capped hocks that help maintain them not to flare/get larger

I would always suspect some conformation, or excessive work stress, that is causing it to enlarge. It’s a symptom of swelling of the joint bursa.

do you have a conformation type pic of her?

thanks JB
I’ll include a pix, however, her capped hock happened due to banging it/pasture roughness, not her conformation. But regardless? I was asking if anything new had come to be suggested for an already established capped hock to lessen/help avoid it getting any bigger. Just if anyone utilized something regularly for an already capped hock to aid at that point.

Unfortunately the pic doesn’t help.

I wasn’t questioning how the capping happened to begin with. But conformation can mean it’s got some extra stresses on it that wouldn’t otherwise bother a previously capped hock on a “perfectly” conformed horse/leg.

the REAL point is that if it’s getting larger, look to why, not just to treat it. Is she working too hard for her fitness? Are her hind toes too long? Is the footing too deep? It’s the same questions to ask if she suddenly developed a thoroughpin or bog spavin - there’s a stressor that the body can’t handle right now.

You can’t really reduce a set, cold capped hock. You said you are “noticing it enlarging”, and that means something is causing it, so that’s what you want to investigate. The traditional protocol for managing this is rest, ice, dmso with or without some dex, etc, maybe some Voltaren or Surpass. I don’t know of anything NEW though

thanks all I wanted to know was if there was something I wasn’t aware of to use for an already set capped hock. Sorry the ‘pix’ didn’t help.
