Shadbellys are only worn by women, and only for “Stakes” classes, classics, and recently in hunter derbys. Basically, anywhere “formal” attire is required. A shadbelly is not required attire however, and a regular hunt coat can be worn for these classes as well. It isn’t appropriate to wear a shadbelly unless it is noted as appropriate attire in the class specs. Is this similar to when saddleseat riders wear tuxedos with top hats?
No, formal tux’s and top hats, bow ties and cumberbunds are usually worn during evening classes or sometimes a formal coat will be worn as seperates with a pair of jod’s. But, it is not a requirement but someone who shows frequently and at higher levels will have a wardrobe of very pricey habits!!!
To everyone else who has answered my questions and provided explainations I want to say thank you for taking the time to do so. I’m very inquisitive so as the saying goes…“inquiring minds want to know” .
