Alternative to KER Releve for PSSM2

Hey all,

It’s very tricky to diagnose, but my vet and I are going to go ahead and put my mare on a PSSM2 protocol.

I’m getting her hay tested and just started a muscle and Vit E supplement to get to the recommended levels of support.

I wanted to switch her from Tribute Kalm n EZ to KER Releve, which was created with Dr. Valberg - but alas Chewy is out and KER doesn’t know when it will be back in stock there.

I was thinking of Hygain Zero, but the calorie count seems pretty low (around 800 calories/lbs).

For Type2, horses need more protein/less fat than in Type1.

Anyone with a Type2 horse out there want to share their recommendations?

Hi!

If you haven’t already I recommend joining the “pssm forum” group on Facebook- that group has been even more helpful than my vets (and just Dr Valberg’s recommendations). I have my mare on a couple pounds of timothy/alfalfa pellets as a carrier with ALCAR (this made the biggest difference), Emcelle vitamin E, whey protein for protein/BCAAs, and now just starting to try Immubiome Lean Muscle and Equifeast LAM essentials.

PSSM2 is SO hard😔 good luck!

I will say that Progressive Topline Extreme is extremely unpalatable. She also recommends Purina Supersport, but when I looked at it, the feeding amount was quite high and would not work for my easier keeper, but maybe it will for you. Otherwise, you can probably add Tri Aminos and a BCAA supplement and/or top dress a ration balancer with your main feed if you need more calories than just a RB.

It doesn’t take a ton of protein I don’t think, not like the large amounts of fat for type 1. But you want complete protein, so that’s usually soy or whey based.

It looks like Releve can be bought directly from the KER website? https://shop.ker.com/products/re-leve?variant=279361214

It can, but shipping costs make it prohibitively expensive.

Looks like Chewy is back in stock, so I’ll grab a few bags and if it goes out of stock again I’ll probably switch to Tribute Essential K as a stop gap with something for extra calories if needed - she’s a very easy keeper.

Thanks all!
